EcuRed states on its webpage that its goal "is the accumulation and development of knowledge with a non-profit, pro-democracy aim from a decolonizing point of view".

CriticismReception
Due to its purpose and editorial characteristics, EcuRed was described in its beginnings by some media as "a Castro version of Wikipedia and not fair and biased in articles on politics, contemporary history and biographies of relevant figures in the recent history of Cuba." It has been criticized by Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas, winner of the Sakharov Prize for Human Rights, for providing slanderous information against members of the so-called Cuban dissidents and for serving as the official means of communication for the Cuban government. ForRojas example, some ofmentions the articlesarticle mentionedon are "Fidel Castro", which isdescribes describedhim as the undisputed Leader of the Cuban Revolution and "United States", described as the empire of our time. The opposition and activist Yoani Sánchez is described as a "cybermercenary linked to the United States government." It also addresses other topics such as "State Terrorism in Colombia" which alludes to the so-called "democratic security policy" of the Álvaro Uribe government.

The alleged bias of its content cost it the nickname Castropedia in an article published by the British newspaper The Guardian shortly after the portal's inauguration.
