Personal life
In 1986, Plimpton had begunbegan to date her co-star River Phoenix of The Mosquito Coast and the 1988 Sidney Lumet film Running on Empty. Plimpton and Phoenix met a year prior, but their romance started during the filming of the 1986 Peter Weir film, as their relationship lasted from February 1986 to June of 1989; a relationship that had sadly ended due to Phoenix's substance abuse. Plimpton spoke of this by stating, "When we split up, a lot of it was that I had learned that screaming, fighting, and begging wasn’t going to change him. He had to change himself, and he didn’t want to yet." Nonetheless, they had continued a relationship in some form for many years with sustaining a close friendship throughout the remaining of his last years alive.

Throughout her relationship with Phoenix and their eventual close friendship, Plimpton was a devoted vegan and passionate supporter of the animal-rights organization, PETA. A heartwarming act that prompted this decision was on a date with Phoenix, "One night, when they were 15, they were both in New York City, and they went out for a dinner. Plimpton ordered soft-shell crabs. A horrified River abruptly left the restaurant. When Plimpton followed him, she found him walking down Park Avenue, crying. "I love you so much – why?" he wept. He was devastated that she was eating animals, but even more, he was deeply wounded that he had not been able to convince her that veganism was the better, more moral path. I love him for that. For his dramatic desire that we share every belief, that I be with him all the way.’’
