The shelling was an attack on a Cai Lậy District government-controlled schoolyard in South Vietnam government school-yard on 9 March 1973,[1] by attacking Viet Cong (VC) troops.[2] The drive now is centering on the districts of Cai Be and Cai Lay, areas of traditional Vietcong control in Dinh Tuong Province in the northern delta.

The shelling came about during a skirmish between attacking VC forces and militias defending the district.

The South Vietnamese command reported that three Government soldiers were killed and twenty soldiers and civilians were wounded in the attack, with 120 mortar and artillery rounds being fired. In a related incident, VC troops shelled a militia post two miles away from Cai Lay, following this up with a ground attack during which four militiamen were killed and eleven wounded. It is not known whether the VC suffered casualties.[3]
