Nearby you'll find lots of hazards that wary spacers have given nicknames: the Maw, the Black Pits, Pilots' End, and other perils.Midnight's book

The Black Pits were a navigational hazard that had been named by wary spacers.[2] They were located in the Slice,[1] in the vicinity of[2] the Outer Rim Territories[3] world Kessel as well as the surrounding Akkadese Maelstrom,[2] a region consisting of ionized gas, dust clouds, water vapor, ammonia, carbonbergs, and gravity wells.[4] At some point between 10 BBY and approximately 1 ABY,[5] the barkeep known as Midnight mentioned the Black Pits as one of Kessel's nearby hazards in a book they were writing.[2]

The Black Pits were mentioned in the 2018 book Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor, authored by Jason Fry.[2]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor places the Akkadese Maelstrom and its galactic neighborhood, which included the Black Pits, in the area of space Star Wars: The Galactic Explorer's Guide identifies as the Slice.
  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 2.5 Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor

  4. Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious
  5. Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor is presented as an in-universe book written by Midnight that mentions Lando Calrissian losing the Millennium Falcon to Han Solo in a game of sabacc and that is also set prior to the former becoming the Baron Administrator of Cloud City. Star Wars: Timelines dates the sabacc game between Calrissian and Solo to 10 BBY. Additionally, Calrissian becomes Baron Administrator at some point after the flashback events of Halcyon Legacy 4 and years prior to the events of The Empire Strikes Back: So You Want to Be a Jedi?, which Timelines dates to approximately 1 ABY and 3 ABY, respectively. Therefore, Midnight's book must have been authored at some point between 10 BBY and approximately 1 ABY.
