Born 14 February 1841, son of a Lancaster hatter. He joined the Oswestry Advertiser as a printer about 1863 and began to write for that paper. After gaining experience as a journalist in Wales and the border counties, he was invited in September 1873 to manage and edit the Cambrian News at Aberystwyth. In 1880 some of his friends purchased that newspaper for him. Under his supervision and through his vigorous personality and fearless independent views on local and national affairs, the Cambrian News became one of the most influential weekly newspapers in Wales. He was the author of Agriculture in Wales, 1879, and Emancipation of Women. He was knighted in 1915 and died on 16 July the same year.
