English: The ancient site of Olympia is located in Greece. The Olympic Games originated here. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1989. The site of the ancient ruins, the source of the name Archaia Olympia, is 588 metres (643 yd) to the SE of the modern village, beneath Kronious Hill. The site is named Archeologikos Choros Olimpias, "Archaeological Site of Olympia." The ruins are politically within the village, which has a caretaker function. The village is also home to the museums, such as the Archaiologiko Museio Olympias, the "Archaeological Museum of Olympia." For the town in Washington, USA, see Category:Olympia, Washington.
