English: The Bayeux Tapestry (long, which depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England concerning William, Duke of Normandy and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings. The tapestry consists of some fifty scenes annotated in Latin, embroidered on linen with coloured woollen yarns. It is likely that it was commissioned by Bishop Odo, William's half-brother, and made in England in the 1070s. In 1729 the hanging was rediscovered by scholars at a time when it was being displayed annually in Bayeux Cathedral. The tapestry is now exhibited at Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Bayeux, Normandy. A complete re-creation of the tapestry as a mosaic of 1.5 million steel pieces has been completed over 20 years from 1979 to 1999 by Michael Linton and is on display in Geraldine, New Zealand.

Elle semble avoir été commandée par Odon de Bayeux, le demi-frère de Guillaume le Conquérant et décrit les faits relatifs à la conquête normande de l'Angleterre en 1066. Elle détaille les événements clés de cette conquête, notamment la bataille de Hastings. Toutefois, près de la moitié des images relatent des faits antérieurs à l'invasion elle-même. Bien que très favorable à Guillaume le Conquérant au point d'être considérée parfois comme une œuvre de propagande, elle a une valeur documentaire inestimable pour la connaissance du présentée au public dans un musée qui lui est entièrement dédié. La tapisserie est inscrite depuis 2007 au registre Mémoire du monde par l'UNESCO.
