English: The Grumman F9F Panther was designated F9F with the U.S. Navy (and with it U.S. Marine Corps) until 18 September 1962 when, with the introduction of the Tri-Service aircraft designation system, all Panthers still in service were redesignated F-9. By 1962, only QF-9 Panther target drones remained in U.S. service. The Panther shared its designation with the swept-wing Grumman F-9 Cougar. F9F-1 to F9F-5 were Panthers, F9F-6 to F9F-8 were Cougars.
