Porgy and Bess is an opera composed by George Gershwin, and first performed in 1935. The libretto was written by DuBose Heyward; the lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. The opera is based on DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy and subsequent play of the same title, which deal with African-American life in South Carolina in the early 1920s.
