Deep Run High School is a part magnet high school in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. It is named after Deep Run School, one of Henrico County's first schools which was a two-room schoolhouse that can still be found on the grounds of Short Pump Elementary School. The school had approximately 1,900 students and over 135 faculty members during the 2022-2023 school year. About 200 students are part of the Center for Information Technology, a highly competitive magnet program open to all county residents.

Deep Run High School (DRHS, Deep Run, DR) is named after Deep Run School in celebration of Henrico County Public Schools' 300 year old tradition of excellence in education. Deep Run School was one of the earliest schools in Henrico County; the original structure can be found on the grounds of Short Pump Elementary School. Located at 4801 Twin Hickory Road in Short Pump, the Far West End suburb of Richmond, Deep Run's district encompasses several neighborhoods in the area including Twin Hickory (in which the school resides), Wyndham, Wellesley, Fox Hall, and Barrington.

Deep Run is consistently highly ranked.

In the 2023 rankings, U.S. News & World Report, which ranked 17,680 schools, ranked Deep Run High School #1 in Henrico County, #3 in the Richmond metro area, #11 in Virginia, #90 in national magnet high schools, and #567 nationally. Despite having a robust and very competitive Center for Information Technology enrolling 50-60 students per grade, Deep Run HS was not mentioned on the US News best STEM high school list, perhaps due to not being classified as a “STEM school.”

Deep Run High School was named after one of Henrico County's first schools: Deep Run School. Deep Run School was a two-room schoolhouse that can still be found on the grounds of Short Pump Elementary School.

In 2002, Deep Run opened its doors solely to freshmen and sophomores as the newest member of Henrico County's secondarypublic schoolsschools. While freshmen entered from neighboring middle schools (Short Pump Middle School and Pocahontas Middle School), incoming sophomores predominantly transferred from John Randolph Tucker High School. Deep Run reached full capacity during its 2004-20052004–2005 academic year and graduated its first class on June 16, 2005.

In 2007, Deep Run became overcrowded due to increased buildup of surrounding areas. To alleviate the problem, during the summer of 2008, six trailers were placed on school property for the 2008–2009 school year. They were removed during the summer of 2010, when Glen Allen High School was opened.

Freshman Year

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the last day for in-person classes was March 13, 2020. Students completed some work online to finish out the school year. Classes stayed virtual for the school opening in September 2020. The school day was shortened by one hour after parents expressed concern over the number of hours students were spending on their laptops. On March 1 and 2, 2021, the school reopened for a small number of 9th graders who had opted back in to in-person instruction (via a form completed in November 2020.) The following Monday, March 8, 2021, upperclassmen who had opted in joined the 9th graders in-person for a modified schedule. Many seniors opted to stay virtual. Teachers taught the in-person and the virtual students at the same time. The school day remained shortened. Wednesdays remained virtual and were called "Wellness Wednesdays." Students were assigned 25 minutes of work per class on Wednesdays and were required to participate in a half hour "wellness" lesson. The Wildcat Weekly Newsletter dated March 10–16, 2021 indicated that "over 350" students had returned to the building out of "1,882." (Just under 20%.) Masks were required to be worn, and students were assigned seats far apart from one another during lunchtime.

On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, all Henrico County Schools, including Deep Run High School, fully reopened. Some restrictions, like mandatory masking, were still in place due to the Delta variant. The mask mandate was eventually lifted by the county on February 2, 2022.

Deep Run High offers four levels of Theater Arts classes (Theater Arts I, II, III, and IV, IV being for honors credit) for students as well as a stagecraft class, which is new for the 2006-2007 year. Within class, students study acting, playwriting, directing, technical theater, and theater history, the subject matter often depending upon whatever level the students are currently in.<BR><BR>

* Todd Wharton, soccer player

Each school year, the Drama Department puts on a fall play, a spring musical, and a night of one-act plays in the winter (January or February). In the past, they have also put on various dinner theaters in the fall and spring. The one-acts are chosen and performed by each of the Theater Arts classes and presented in a one-night showcase. The one-act of the level III and IV class is taken to compete every year. Past shows (both mainstage and one-acts) include Into the Woods (Spring 2003), Pillow Talk (Fall 2003), Two by Two (Spring 2004), You Can't Take It With You (Fall 2004), Competition Piece (Winter 2005), A Simple Task (Winter 2005), Omnipotence and the Wheelbarrow Man (Winter 2005), Snow...Sort of...White (Winter 2005), Once Upon a Mattress (Spring 2005), Fools (Fall 2005), Fifteen Reasons Not to be in a Play (Winter 2006), Romeo and Juliet at Verona High (Winter 2006), High Stakes (Winter 2006), Governing Alice (Winter 2006), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Spring 2006), and It Happens Every Summer (Fall 2006), Square One (Winter 2007), Caution: Politricks (Winter 2007), No Show (Winter 2007), and The Mysterious Art of Advertising (Winter 2007). Deep Run offers students the opportunity to join its Drama Club, which is mainly occupied with organizing the school's annual talent show in May.<BR><BR>

Deep Run is also affiliated with the International Thespian Society, and inducts new members with the appropriate number of hours of theater activity every May. The Deep Run ITS's primary job throughout the year is the planning and organization of the annual Mr. Deep Run Pageant in February/March.<BR><BR>

Faculty
Controversy
Deep Run commonly receives the reputation as the "golden school" of the county, this is mostly due to the area it is located within as well as the communities which Deep Run serves. However; Deep Run, like any school, possesses those faculty members which do not always do the system justice.

* Dr. Aaron C. Spence (Principal) -- is commonly noted as a "push-over" by other individuals in the county, both students and adults. While it is commendable that he has risen to such a high position at such a young age; he is known for his poor judgement and lack of acceptance of the current situations and problems of the school. In regards to more serious issues, he commonly disregards these in an effort to maintain the "golden school" image.

* Tanya Kish (formerly Smith) (Assistant Principal) -- is noted by many to lack empathy. Ms. Kish commonly shows little sympathy to the problems of individuals, while she is the Asst. Principal, and as such the usual disciplinarian, the other Asst. Principals generally do not show a mistrust and lack of sympathy for their student's problems.

* Bea F. McLeod (School Counseling Department Director) -- noted for her inability to handle the difficult tasks. Often Ms. McLeod will "pass the buck," in an effort to handle easier issues. She is often found to fail to follow through from beginning to end, this is especially true of the more difficult issues her students face.
