I'm curious about your edit to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyra_Davidica on 2nd October last. Why is a reference to a legitimate choir of good reputation, that is relevant to subject of the page, considered to be "spam"? 2A02:C7C:B201:F600:857C:9A9B:DDF8:C904 (talk) 22:19, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP 2A02. To answer your question, there are two reasons why I removed it. 1) It was not relavant to the point of the page, which is to inform users of the songbook, not of the choir. 2) It contained an external link, which is almost never allowed in the body of an article. If you have reliable sources saying that the choir is notable for inclusion on wikipedia, then see WP:YFA. Otherwise, if you have further questions, either let me know or ask at the teahouse. Happy editing! NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 22:38, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NightWolf1223; I saw on my home page your message. Thank you for your offer to help me with questions. I sure will reach out to you. Please take a look at the Draft that I am editing currently and let me know your suggestions to improve it. Thank you. TakeDealyo (talk) 01:13, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@TakeDealyo You have a major issue with refbombing. For example, you do not need 8 sources to say that the person's occupation. It is worth noting that content does not determine notabillity. I think it would be best to move on to another topic as this one does not appear notable. NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 02:21, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for responding NightWolf1223. It is unfortunate that this draft is being subjected to "refbombing". However, I have learned a lot from feedback of reviewers. I do believe that the subject of this draft has made three world-class contributions of lasting nature in technology. These are supported by high quality primary sources extensive bibliography and has also received fair amount of media coverage. All are referenced. It may be perhaps my limitation as a new article writer to Wikipedia. Thank you for your support. TakeDealyo (talk) 17:20, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@TakeDealyo I have one question for you. Do you have a personal, professional, financial or other interest that would prevent you from
writing a netural article? I am asking because I suspect you might have a conflict of interest. NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 18:04, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.

  • Discussions
    • Open request for adminship: S8321414 (RfP scheduled to end after 13 November 2023 14:50 UTC)
    • New requests for permissions/Bot:
      • DiFoolBot 2 (Task: import VIAF ID based on Union List of Artist Names ID)
      • KizuleBot (Task: Adding sitelinks to Serbian Wikipedia for maintenance categories (see contributions of account) based on items for English Wikipedia's ones)
      • KormiSKbot (Task: Linking newly created pages on SKWiki to the appropriate Wikidata items.)
  • Tool of the week
    • OpenFlights.org is now getting some of its airline data from Wikidata. It is a free open-source tool that allows you to log, map, calculate, and share your flights and trips.
  • Development
    • Wikibase REST API: We continued working on the new endpoints for POST /entities/items/{item_id}/aliases/{language_code} (phab:T335842) and DELETE /entities/items/{item_id}/descriptions/{lang_code} (phab:T342986)
    • EntitySchemas: We are continuing the work on the new data type for linking to EntitySchemas, working on overcoming architectural issues.
    • Language codes: We continued work towards allowing many more languages by default for Wikibase Lexeme and monolingual text statements. This will remove the need for a lot of requests for new language codes to be added. (phab:T341409)

Recent changes

Problems

  • Last week, users who previously visited Meta-Wiki or Wikimedia Commons and then became logged out on those wikis could not log in again. The problem is now resolved. [5]
  • Last week, some pop-up dialogs and menus were shown with the wrong font size. The problem is now resolved. [6]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 November. It will be on all wikis from 16 November (calendar).

Future changes

  • Reference Previews are coming to many wikis as a default feature. They are popups for references, similar to the PagePreviews feature. You can opt out of seeing them. If you are using the gadgets Reference Tooltips or Navigation Popups, you won’t see Reference Previews. Deployment is planned for November 22, 2023.
  • Canary (also known as heartbeat) events will be produced into Wikimedia event streams from December 11. Streams users are advised to filter out these events, by discarding all events where meta.domain == "canary". Updates to Pywikibot or wikimedia-streams will discard these events by default. [7]

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.

  • Events
    • Upcoming:
      • Data Modelling Days, from November 30th to December 2nd: 3 days of online events to address data modelling challenges, discuss how to improve the way we structure data together, and discover the point of view of external reusers. Feel free to have a look at the program (under construction) and to sign up as a participant.
      • Wikidata Lab XXXIX: Structuring the Wikimedia Ecosystem presented by Wiki Movimento Brasil. November 21 at 2:00 PM CEST. The presentation will be held in English by the wikimedian Mike Peel.
      • Linked Data for Libraries LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group Working Hour November 20th, 2023: Over the summer and into the fall the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group will be offering a series of Wikidata Working Hours to give folks an opportunity to try out various Wikidata-related skills and tools by assembling a data set of diverse library and information science (LIS) materials (articles, conference proceedings, books) and adding it to Wikidata. Wikidata Working Hours provide hands-on Wikidata experience in a supportive space. We hope you will join us if you are interested in learning more about Wikidata, exploring LIS literature, and have been looking for a fun Wikidata project to contribute to. The seventh Wikidata Working Hour will cover the Author Disambiguator tool, which helps users assign authors to articles.During the session we will demonstrate how to use the tool on an author who was created during a previous working hour, and another who doesn't exist in Wikidata yet. After the demonstration, participants are encouraged to try the tool themselves during the rest of the working hour. This session will build on the work done in previous Working Hours by connecting authors to the articles they have written. This session will be recorded and the recording shared on the event page
      • Wikibase for art and cultural data (German) - #9 of kuwiki tips & tools, taking place Thursday, 23 November 2023, 19-20.30
    • Ongoing:
    • Past:
      • ItWikiCon '23 (Italian) was hosted in Bari, Italy between the 17th - 19th November. Check the Programme for details on sessions and check for recordings or slidedecks of presentations.
      • GLAM Wiki 2023 took place in Montevideo, Uruguay. There were several Wikidata-related sessions some of which are linked in the Videos section.
  • Tool of the week
    • User-level gender statistics for Wikipedia - a tool that computes the number of articles created by gender has been repaired after some months of unavailability. It relies on xtools and P21 property.
    • Luthor - tool for finding usage examples from Wikisource and adding them to lexemes on Wikidata.
  • Development
    • We are taking steps towards making many more languages available in Lexemes and monolingual text statement values. (phab:T341409)
    • Nikki fixed a bug where the CSS class for a statement rank wasn't updated after a rank change (phab:T209138)
    • We are continuing the work on improving EntitySchemas by making it possible to link to them in statements.
    • We are migrating several tools from the Wikit design system to the Codex design system to be able to deprecate Wikit in the future.

You can see all open tickets related to Wikidata here. If you want to help, you can also have a look at the tasks needing a volunteer.

Growth team newsletter #29

Welcome to the twenty-ninth newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations

The Growth team will host its first community conversation Monday, 4 December (19:00 - 20:30 UTC). The topic for this meeting will be Mentorship.

This first meeting language will be English, but we plan to host conversations in other languages, and about other topics. Please visit the conversation page on-wiki for the details on how to join. You can also watch the page, or suggest ideas for upcoming conversations there.

Impact Module

At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [17]

We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [18] [19]

We have a few Wikipedias remaining:

  • German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
  • There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.

Mentorship

When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [21]

We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [22]

We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [23]

It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [24]

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.

  • Tool of the week
    • ZotWb < export records in a Zotero group library to a custom Wikibase, prepare datasets to send to OpenRefine, feed OpenRefine reconciliaton results back to the Wikibase. Wikidata is envolved in the entity reconciliation.
Here's a short explanation and demo video
Tool is written and provided by David Lindermann with support from WMF Rapid Grant.

Feel free to suggest next week's Showcase Item and Lexeme!

  • Development
    • Wikibase REST API:
      • We finished the endpoint for removing an Item's label in a specific language (phab:T335841) and the endpoint for modifying descriptions on a Property (phab:T342981)
      • We are working on the endpoint for adding aliases in a given language for a Property (phab:T343721) and removing a Property's label in a given language (phab:T342983)
    • Mismatch Finder: We are continuing the work on moving the tool over to the new design system Codex
    • We adjusted the styling for the values of monolingual text statements to make the language easier to distinguish from the value (phab:T280774)
    • mul language code: We made some final adjustments to get it ready for testing.
    • Lexemes: We are adding a license note for anon users when editing a Lexeme’s lemma, a Form or Sense (phab:T343999)

  • Tool of the week
    • Cersei - is a tool designed for importing or scraping data from various third-party sources, using source-specific Python code. It can use a "headless browser" to scrape complicated websites that rely on eg JavaScript to navigate. It can therefore access data sources that can not be accessed via eg Mix'n'match. The data from sources can be updated regularly, either for everything, or just changed entries (if the source has a "recent changes" equivalent).
    • Wikidata:Zotero/Cita - is a Wikidata addon for Zotero that adds citations (i.e., what other items an item cites) metadata support to this open source reference management software, using cites work (P2860) information available from Wikidata, and enabling users to easily contribute missing data.

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.

Discussions

  • New request for comments: Community request for the development team to access inverse properties on client wikis. (Summary: We currently cannot access inverse property values on Wikipedia. This can be a data management issue on Wikipedia as we must always ask ourself if we must introduce an inverse property for cases where we need them. So I think it’s useful to gather the usecases community would want and draft a request for an API to the devteam to do that.)

Development

  • Wikibase REST API:
    • We are finishing the endpoint for adding/replacing a sitelink on an Item for a given wiki (phab:T342987) and have finished the ones for getting and removing a sitelink from an Item (phab:T344039, phab:T344685)
    • We have documented the differences in sitelink data structure between Wikibase REST API and Action API responses (phab:T355659)
    • We fixed the bug where sitelink data was not including badges even when available (phab:T355293)
  • IP masking: We are continuing the work on adapting Wikibase so we don't show IP addresses for non-logged-in users.
  • mul: We finished the user testing and will now work on the remaining blockers for the first release.

You can see all open tickets related to Wikidata here. If you want to help, you can also have a look at the tasks needing a volunteer.

Weekly Tasks

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • The mobile site history pages now use the same HTML as the desktop history pages. If you hear of any problems relating to mobile history usage please point them to the phabricator task.
  • On most wikis, admins can now block users from making specific actions. These actions are: uploading files, creating new pages, moving (renaming) pages, and sending thanks. The goal of this feature is to allow admins to apply blocks that are adequate to the blocked users' activity. Learn more about "action blocks". [59][60]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 February. It will be on all wikis from 8 February (calendar). [61][62]
  • Talk pages permalinks that included diacritics and non-Latin script were malfunctioning. This issue is fixed. [63]

Future changes

  • 24 Wikipedias with Reference Tooltips as a default gadget are encouraged to remove that default flag. This would make Reference Previews the new default for reference popups, leading to a more consistent experience across wikis. For 46 Wikipedias with less than 4 interface admins, the change is already scheduled for mid-February, unless there are concerns. The older Reference Tooltips gadget will still remain usable and will override this feature, if it is available on your wiki and you have enabled it in your settings. [64][65]

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Hello again NightWolf,

I need to get out to a picture on Wikimedia Commons to correct some of the attributes of a picture I uploaded last month. Here's what I need to do: I got permission from the photographer to add the photo to Wikipedia in conjunction with a page I'm developing. The photo in question is "Peter Wayne Lewis.jpg" and although it now looks like I took the picture, that's not correct - Jill Dobkin actually took the picture. She's a professional photographer out on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/jilldobkin/). The photo was taken during a promotional session in France last year. I was going to edit the details on the photo to correctly attribute the photo to Jill, but there's the "Permission" attribute I'm not sure about. Can you help?? --Karl8704 (talk) 19:04, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@[[User:Karl8704|] You should get the photographer to follow the instructions at c:COM:VRT to send in a form saying that the photographer relicenses the photo to a creative Commons license. NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 20:38, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK will do. Did not know about this, but I've had an ongoing conversation daily, for the past few weeks with the photographer. I think we have it resolved, but I'll look at c:COM:VRT to see if we did it right. Thanks. Karl8704 (talk) 23:32, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Nightwolf, Another question about uploading images: a JPG of a painting was sent to me by a photographer who took the picture, and I'd like to include on a draft Wikipedia article. Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • The mobile visual editor is now the default editor for users who never edited before, at a small group of wikis. Research shows that users using this editor are slightly more successful publishing the edits they started, and slightly less successful publishing non-reverted edits. Users who defined the wikitext editor as their default on desktop will get the wikitext editor on mobile for their first edit on mobile as well. [80]
  • The mw.config value wgGlobalGroups now only contains groups that are active in the wiki. Scripts no longer have to check whether the group is active on the wiki via an API request. A code example of the above is: if (/globalgroupname/.test(mw.config.get("wgGlobalGroups"))). [81]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 February. It will be on all wikis from 29 February (calendar). [82][83]

Future changes

  • The right to change edit tags (changetags) will be removed from users in Wikimedia sites, keeping it by default for admins and bots only. Your community can ask to retain the old configuration on your wiki before this change happens. Please indicate in this ticket to keep it for your community before the end of March 2024.

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Noting that I have seen this. I might not be able to respond for a couple of days. NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 16:10, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @NightWolf1223! I hope you are well. Is there any chance you can help me this weekend? My page is up for deletion and no one has been able to look over the 3 COI requests I had submitted 3 days ago yet. I'm happy to correct the submission, but since no one has given me feedback yet, I'm worried it will get deleted soon.
Thanks so much,

  • Tool of the week
    • WiQuizz - from Nuxt and SPARQL WiQuizz allows you to create or play quiz games where content is generated from Wikidata. It could be a fun way to get people interacting with Wikidata!

Recent changes

  • The Special:Book page (as well as the associated "Create a book" functionality) provided by the old Collection extension has been removed from all Wikisource wikis, as it was broken. This does not affect the ability to download normal books, which is provided by the Wikisource extension. [84]
  • Wikitech now uses the next-generation Parsoid wikitext parser by default to generate all pages in the Talk namespace. Report any problems on the Known Issues discussion page. You can use the ParserMigration extension to control the use of Parsoid; see the ParserMigration help documentation for more details.
  • Maintenance on etherpad is completed. If you encounter any issues, please indicate in this ticket.
  • Gadgets allow interface admins to create custom features with CSS and JavaScript. The Gadget and Gadget_definition namespaces and gadgets-definition-edit user right were reserved for an experiment in 2015, but were never used. These were visible on Special:Search and Special:ListGroupRights. The unused namespaces and user rights are now removed. No pages are moved, and no changes need to be made. [85]
  • A usability improvement to the "Add a citation" in Wikipedia workflow has been made, the insert button was moved to the popup header. [86]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 March. It will be on all wikis from 7 March (calendar). [87][88]

Future changes

  • All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [89]
  • The HTML markup of headings and section edit links will be changed later this year to improve accessibility. See Heading HTML changes for details. The new markup will be the same as in the new Parsoid wikitext parser. You can test your gadget or stylesheet with the new markup if you add ?useparsoid=1 to your URL (more info) or turn on Parsoid read views in your user options (more info).

Weekly Tasks

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 March. It will be on all wikis from 14 March (calendar). [90][91]
  • After consulting with various communities, the line height of the text on the Minerva skin will be increased to its previous value of 1.65. Different options for typography can also be set using the options in the menu, as needed. [92]
  • The active link color in Minerva will be changed to provide more consistency with our other platforms and best practices. [93]
  • Structured data on Commons will no longer ask whether you want to leave the page without saving. This will prevent the “information you’ve entered may not be saved” popups from appearing when no information have been entered. It will also make file pages on Commons load faster in certain cases. However, the popups will be hidden even if information has indeed been entered. If you accidentally close the page before saving the structured data you entered, that data will be lost. [94]

Future changes

  • All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [95][96]

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:
