The Magnificent Seven is an upcoming American western action film directed by Antoine Fuqua, and written by Nic Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk. A remake of the 1960 western film of the same name, which in turn was a remake of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai, the film stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Peter Sarsgaard and Haley Bennett.

Principal photography began on May 18, 2015, in the north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The film is set to premiere on September 8, 2016 at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and to be released in the United States in conventional and IMAX theatres on September 23, 2016.

Premise

As the town Rose Krick is put under the siege of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the residents enlist the help of seven outlaws, headed by bounty hunter Sam Chisolm, to protect them while they prepare for the anticipated violent confrontation. However, upon meeting the town's residents, the Seven find themselves fighting for much more than money.

Developement

Fuqua cited that his grandmother was a key influence and inspiration in the remake.[4] The two of them were penchant for western films and would watch them together such as Shane (1953) and movies of Steve McQueen and Yul Brynner, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart.[4] The film was reported to be in the planning stages in 2012, with Tom Cruise starring. It was reported that Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, and Matt Damon might join the film.[5]

Fuqua worked to create a diverse cast,[6] a radical departure from its predecessor. It's a decision Fuqua says reflects historical reality more than it does any conscious attempt to update the story. "There were a lot of black cowboys, a lot of Native Americans; Asians working on the railroads. The truth of the West is more modern than the movies have been."[7] The actors were casted between December 2014 and July 2015.[8][9][10] On February 20, 2015, Haley Bennett was set to star as the widow of a man who was murdered, and she hires seven bounty hunters to get revenge.[11] On the same day, Deadline.com's Mike Fleming Jr. confirmed that Jason Momoa had left the film because he was already booked to play Aquaman.[12] The cast were put through cowboy training before filming commenced.[4]

Chris Pratt plays Josh Farraday "The Gambler".[13]

Martin Sensmeier plays Red Harvest, The Sharpshooter.[14] Sensmeier auditioned several times in order to get the role. He stayed off from social media and studied immensely in order to protray his part right.[6] Scotty Augere, who previoualy worked on Dances with Wolves taught Sensmeier how to ride a horse backback and would ride with him two hours a day.[6]

Music

James Horner was pegged to write the film's score, but died on June 22, 2015. In July 2015, nearly a month after Horner's death, Fuqua learned that Horner had already starting working on music for the film before filming commenced.[15] Horner's friend and score producer Simon Franglen, co-composed the score after Horner's death, which will be released by Sony Classical.[16] As such, the score will be the third and final Horner score to be released posthumously.

Filming

Principal photography on the film lasted 64 days, from March 18 to August 18, 2015, in the north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[17][18][19] Other locations include St. Francisville and Zachary, Louisiana.[18][19] Filming in St. Francisville was completed between May 18 and May 29, 2015.[20]

Since his grandmother was the prime infuence of the film, everyday after filming, Fuqua would ask himself if she would have fun watching it. That was his goal.[4]

Release

The film will have its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2016.[21][22] It will also serve as the closing night film at the Venice Film Festival on September 9.[23] The film was initially set to be released on January 13, 2017.[24] However, in August 2015, Sony Pictures Entertainment moved the release date to September 23, 2016.[25]

Box office

The film is projected to gross up to $50 million in its opening weekend.[26]
