==Creation and development==

===Concept===

Ahsoka was created by [[George Lucas]] and [[Dave Filoni]].<ref>{{cite web |date=October 11, 2022 | url=https://www.starwars.com/news/star-wars-the-mandalorian-guide-to-season-two-exclusive-excerpt | title=Explore Ahsoka Tano's Transformation in Star Wars: The Mandalorian: Guide to Season Two - Exclusive Excerpt |website=StarWars.com }}</ref> The character was developed to illustrate how [[Anakin Skywalker]] develops from the brash, undisciplined Padawan apprentice in ''[[Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones]]'' (2002) to the more reserved Jedi Knight in ''[[Episode III – Revenge of the Sith]]'' (2005).<ref name="TVGuide">TV Guide Article August 11, 2008</ref> Lucas, who had two daughters, also wanted the character to appeal to girls.<ref name="taylor">{{Cite book|title=How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise|last=Taylor|first=Chris|publisher=[[Basic Books]]|year=2014|pages=377, 380|type=eBook|oclc=889674238|ref=taylor}}</ref> Early in development, Ahsoka's name was "Ashla".<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.starwars.com/tv-shows/star-wars-rebels/legends-of-the-lasat-trivia-gallery|title=Legends of the Lasat Trivia Gallery|website=StarWars.com|publisher=[[Lucasfilm]]|access-date=May 20, 2016}}</ref>{{efn|According to Filoni, "I think it was the name given to one of the <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[younglings]]<nowiki>]</nowiki> in ''Attack of the Clones''. Filoni, ''The Clone Wars'' supervising director and writer, wrote a fable about Ahsoka's early childhood to help develop the character. He imagined the discovery that she has "the right stuff" to become a Jedi would be a cause for celebration in her hometown.<ref name="untoldtales">{{Cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lS4sclln5J4& |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211221/lS4sclln5J4 |archive-date=2021-12-21 |url-status=live|title=Ahsoka's Untold Tales Panel {{!}} Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016|date=July 15, 2016|website=[[YouTube]]|access-date=July 15, 2016}}{{cbignore}}</ref> Filoni said he is protective of the Ahsoka character.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://herocomplex.latimes.com/tv/star-wars-clone-wars-dave-filoni-ahsoka-yoda/|title='Star Wars: The Clone Wars': Dave Filoni on Ahsoka's fate, Master Yoda|last=Day|first=Patrick Kevin|date=March 7, 2014|website=[[Los Angeles Times]]|access-date=May 20, 2016}}</ref>

Filoni initially struggled with writing Ahsoka because he had "zero perspective" on what it was like to be a 14-year-old girl.<ref name="filonincwit">{{Cite video|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GKUO2JWZW8?t=11m38s |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211221/_GKUO2JWZW8 |archive-date=2021-12-21 |url-status=live|title=Dave Filoni Speaks at the National Center for Women & Information Technology|date=May 24, 2016|access-date=May 26, 2016|time=11m, 38 s}}{{cbignore}}</ref> He, therefore, shifted his focus and instead wrote Ahsoka primarily as a [[Jedi]] who just happens to be an adolescent female.<ref name="filonincwit"/> Filoni said he "has always had a story in mind" for Ahsoka's overall development.<ref name="swce2016">{{Cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MWqEFW4g90 |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211221/0MWqEFW4g90 |archive-date=2021-12-21 |url-status=live|title=Ashley Eckstein and Dave Filoni Interview {{!}} Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016|date=July 15, 2016|website=[[YouTube]]|access-date=July 15, 2016}}{{cbignore}}</ref> He began thinking about the final confrontation between Ahsoka and Vader ever since he started writing material for Ahsoka;<ref>"From Apprentice to Adversary: Vader vs. Ahsoka featurette" from ''Star Wars Rebels'' season 2 Blu-ray. Ashley Eckstein, who primarily voiced Ahsoka, said she and the writers were aware that audiences initially found the character annoying, and that there was a "fine line" between Ahsoka being bratty and becoming endearing. Because production was a year ahead of what was broadcast, with Ahsoka developing over that time, Eckstein implored fans to be patient with the character's growth.<ref name="ecksteinsw.com">{{Cite web|url=https://www.starwars.com/news/from-the-clone-wars-to-rebels-ashley-eckstein-on-ahsoka-tanos-journey|title=From The Clone Wars to Rebels: Ashley Eckstein on Ahsoka Tano's Journey|last=Brooks|first=Dan|date=March 30, 2016|website=StarWars.com|publisher=[[Lucasfilm]]|access-date=May 20, 2016}}</ref>
