On April 15, April 1947, he was elected [[Abbotabbot]] of the Archabbey of Maria Einsiedeln, receiving the traditional [[Bishop (Catholic Church)|episcopal]] [[benediction]] of new abbots from Archbishop [[Filippo Bernardini]] on the following May 5 May. On 24 September 1959, Gut was elected as the fourth [[Abbot]] [[Primate (religion)|Primate]] of the [[Benedictine Confederation]], and thus head of the Benedictine order, on September 24, 1959.
