He studiedbegan his studies at the [[EinsiedelnCollege Abbeyof College]]Maria Einsideln, at the [[College or university school of music|Musicalmusical Conservatoryconservatory]] of [[Basel]], [[University of Basel]], andat the Benedictine [[Anselmianum|Pontificio Sant'Anselmo]] all'Aventino|Internationalin CollegeRome, ofand Saintat Anselm]] andthe [[Pontifical Biblical Institute]] in [[Rome]]. Gut taught at his ''[[alma mater]]'' of the"Pontificio International College of Saint Anselm in RomeSant'Anselmo" from 1930 to 1939, at which time he returned to Switzerland and became a [[professor]] at the Einsiedeln Abbey College. On April 15, April 1947, he was elected [[Abbotabbot]] of the Archabbey of Maria Einsiedeln, receiving the traditional [[Bishop (Catholic Church)|episcopal]] [[benediction]] of new abbots from Archbishop [[Filippo Bernardini]] on the following May 5 May. On 24 September 1959, Gut was elected as the fourth [[Abbot]] [[Primate (religion)|Primate]] of the [[Benedictine Confederation]], and thus head of the Benedictine order, on September 24, 1959.
