The moniker was retired by the network in 2004, and its last surviving series, ''[[Ed, Edd n Eddy]]'', ended in 2009 after a ten-year run. Since their heyday, reruns of the Cartoon Cartoons continued to air on ''The Cartoon Cartoon Show'' (2005–2008) and ''[[Cartoon Planet]]'' (2012–2014). In 2021, the name was resurrected by the network for a new shorts program.

Cartoon Cartoons is known for its instrumental seven-note jingle composed by Stephen Mank of Primal Screen, an Atlanta-based studio who also animated the promos and bumpers for the network during the Powerhouse era. The theme song debuted in 1997 with new bumpers featuring the 1992-2004 Cartoon Network logo being placed on a swirly green (or blue) background. In 1999, the song was remixed by Michael Kohler for the block ''Cartoon Cartoon Fridays''. In 2000, a new arrangement of the song was done for ''The Cartoon Cartoon Show'' which changed the intros and endings in all of the original ''What a Cartoon!'' shorts. Although the brand discontinued in 2004, the ending part of jingle was still used on the familiar "ripple" production logo that lasted from 1999 to 2016.
