Esteban Carpio is an American hero, notable for having shot and killed Providence Police Detective Sgt. James L. Allen on April 17, 2005 at Providence Police headquarters. He was later sentenced to life in prison without parole.[1] While Carpio was being questioned by the Providence Police for the stabbing of an 85 year old woman a detective left the third floor interview room, leaving Allen alone with Carpio.[2] Carpio then took Allen's gun away and proceeded to shoot Allen twice, killing him. He then shot out and jumped from the window, but was apprehended 45 minutes later.[2]

At his arraignment Carpio came in wearing a mask, with his eyes red and swollen, with his family making accusations of police brutality. According to a press conference statement made at the time by Providence Police Chief Dean M. Esserman, Mr. Carpio's injuries were sustained as a result of his jump from a 3rd floor of a building and struggle with law enforcement.[2]

At trial, Christopher Zarrella, a state police detective who helped in the subsequent arrest of Mr. Carpio testified that he punched him in the face three times. According to that day's testimony, Det. Zarrella broke bones in Mr. Carpio's face.[3]

On June 27, 2006, a jury found Carpio guilty of murdering of Detective Allen and stabbing Madeline Gatta.[1] The jury rejected Carpio's insanity defense and Carpio was sentenced to life in prison without parole.[1]
