Jenzabar was established in 1998 by [[Chai Ling]], a former [[Beijing]] student leader.<ref name=crbase/><ref name=bbj00/> Initially the company was known as '''Jenzabar.com'''. It provided Internet portals with [[e-learning|eLearning]] functionality for colleges and universities.<ref name=bbj00/><ref name=gart000616/>

In March 2000, Jenzabar received an [[equity investment]] of $60 million from a group of investors including the [[Omnicom Group]], [[Pegasus Capital Advisors]], New Media Investors (subsidiary of [[Bain & Company|Bain & Co.]]) and [[FleetBoston Financial]].<ref name=bbj00/><ref name=gart000616/>

In June 2000, Jenzabar.com [[Consolidation (business)|amalgamated]] with four higher-education [[enterprise resource planning]] (ERP) vendors – Campus America, CARS, CMDS (Computer Management and Development Services) and Quodata – into Jenzabar Inc.<ref name=gart000616/><ref name=gart000703/><ref name=gart000619/> The move consolidated small-to-midsize college systems market, creating a major new competitor.<ref name=gart000703/><ref name=ecar02/>
