Kamen Rider: Battride War (仮面ライダー バトライド・ウォー, Kamen Raidā Batoraido Wō) is a video game based on the Kamen Rider Series, released for the PlayStation 3 on May 23, 2013.[1] Done in the style of Dynasty Warriors, the player controls one of the Kamen Riders as he battles through a series of enemies. The game mainly features the protagonists of the Heisei era of Kamen Rider, starting with 2000's Kamen Rider Kuuga and featuring up to 2013's Kamen Rider Wizard. Showa-era Kamen Riders were originally meant to be released as downloadable content,[1][2][3] but only two alternate versions of characters were released instead.[4] A limited edition of the game was released that has a soundtrack that includes the original theme songs from the TV series and films.

The game's story mode known as "Chronicle Mode" ultimately pits the Kamen Riders against their mortal enemies in a final showdown.[5][6] In this game, many Heisei Riders had their memories sealed and altered by a former member of Foundation X, Callas (voiced by Hōchū Ōtsuka). Only Wizard who manage to survive the seal and alteration thanks to an entity known as Canaria (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, who also voiced Kiva-la). It is up to Wizard to break free and restore the Heisei Riders' memories.

The game's theme song is "Go get 'em" by the Kamen Rider Girls.[7][8] The physical release of the single included a DLC code to access the Kamen Rider Wizard's All Dragon Figure in game.[4]

In February 2014 it was announced that a sequel titled Kamen Rider: Battride War II (仮面ライダー バトライド・ウォー II, Kamen Raidā Batoraido Wō II) will be released on June 26, 2014, and it will feature characters from the most recent TV series Kamen Rider Gaim as well as story scenarios based on films, including Movie Wars series. As with the original version, a limited edition with the theme songs from the TV series and films will also be released. In addition to the PlayStation 3, Battride War II will be released on the Wii U. The Kamen Rider Girls will again provide the theme song, which this time around will be "Break the shell".[9]

Mitsuru Matsuoka of SOPHIA who portrayed Katsumi Daido/Kamen Rider Eternal in Kamen Rider W Forever: A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate and the Kamen Rider W Returns films will reprise his role as the character in the game.[10] Kento Handa who portrayed Takumi Inui/Kamen Rider Faiz will reprise his role as the character from the television series, which he did not do for the original game.[11] Ken Matsudaira, who portrayed the historical figure Tokugawa Yoshimune in the film Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals, will reprise his role in the game, but as a playable character, riding on horseback rather than motorcycle.[12] Musashi who portrayed Issei Kurosaki/Kamen Rider Caucasus in Kamen Rider Kabuto: God Speed Love, and Hiroyuki Watanabe, Kamen Rider Gaoh in Kamen Rider Den-O: I'm Born!, reprise their roles as well.[13]

In a more recent trailer, the non-player characters describing the story have been changed to brother and sister Reito (レイト) (younger version voiced by Aoi Yuki) and Reina (レイナ) (voiced by Rie Tanaka) who lead the player characters in combatting the villain Cinema (シネマ, Shinema) (voiced by Keiji Fujiwara). In addition, players now have the option to set customized playlists, including the extensive playlist provided by the Premium TV & Movie Sound Edition of the game, as well as their own songs on the PlayStation 3 and Wii U systems, set for particular characters and their forms.[14]

A series of download content campaigns will also be featured, adding new playable characters to the Battride War II roster. The first of these is for Kamen Rider Zangetsu Shin on July 10, followed by Kamen Rider Gaim Kiwami Arms on July 24.

The third title called Kamen Rider: Battride War Genesis (仮面ライダー バトライド・ウォー 創生, Kamen Raidā Batoraido Wō Sōsei) was announced in September 2015 to be released in February 25, 2016. It is part of the anniversary project to celebrate the Kamen Rider franchise's 45th anniversary, and will feature characters from both Kamen Rider Drive and Kamen Rider Ghost after a year of hiatus during Kamen Rider Drive's airing, as well as feature characters who were originally only NPCs and Assist Call characters in Battride War II and the Shōwa era Kamen Riders, which were absent from both previous installments of the game.[15][16][17]

The game's story mode features an original plotline where an evil entity is making the first monsters each Kamen Rider has faced much stronger, thereby killing them before they truly have a chance to become heroes. Only Kamen Rider Ghost, who is already dead, and Kamen Rider Den-O, who can travel through time, can prevent history from being rewritten to eliminate all of the Kamen Riders.

Kohei Murakami was announced to reprised his role as Masato Kusaka/Kamen Rider Kaixa from Kamen Rider 555.[18]

It has been confirmed that the game will feature stages that re-enact the first episode of each Kamen Rider series, including the transformation of Takeshi Hongo into Kamen Rider 1. Hiroshi Fujioka reprises his role to voice his character in the video game.[19][20] First edition copies of the game will come with a DLC code to access a special mission pack and a special Shocker costumed version of Takeshi Hongo.[21][22][23]

The game's theme song will be Tourbillon's song "Colorless Images", from their upcoming album The Decade: 10th Anniversary Best.

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar those of Dynasty Warriors series, in addition of capable form changing and a final form gauge (later known as Strongest Form gauge).

In Battride War II, the gameplay systems changed with new mechanics and improvements, such as the Assist Call gauge and the Ultimate Form gauge.
