Lanfear was released somewhat later than some of her peers as the seals on the Bore weakened. Naturally her first priority was to trace the Dragon Reborn, Rand al'Thor. She took on the disguise of Selene using Illusion, a weave woven from saidar. She tried to push Rand al'Thor to seize power, mainly by seizing the Horn of Valere. She also used her manipulations on main characters such as Mat Cauthon, with a little success. After the Dragon Reborn followed his own path anyway, Selene left but she continued to spy on him through the World of Dreams. Lanfear assumed several other disguises throughout the series, including an Accepted, Else, and an obese peddler, Keille, and an old woman, Silvie. She frequently visited Rand al'Thor privately in her true form and tried to convince him to rule the world beside her, using the two great sa'angreal, the Choedan Kal to dominate the world. She proclaimed her love for him many times, but he scorned her with his memories of her from the Age of Legends.

Behind the scenes Lanfear attempted to elicit the help of other Forsaken, namely Graendal, Rahvin and Sammael to help her overwhelm the Dragon Reborn and convert him to the Shadow. Her tenuous plan had a questionable outcome but as it was reaching some sort of fruition, a darkfriend informed her that Rand al'Thor had slept with Aviendha, an Aiel Maiden of the Spear. This news caused Lanfear to go into a murderous rage, and after skinning the darkfriend alive with the One Power, she encountered Rand al'Thor and his party at the Docks in Cairhien. Rand al'Thor barely stopped her from killing Egwene al'Vere and Aviendha instantly, but they were both left severely injured. Lanfear killed many people at the Docks by channeling waves of fire. She also severely injured Lan Mandragoran and Moiraine Damodred, the latter who had seen a vision of her battle with Lanfear. Lanfear and Rand al'Thor eventually found themselves in a deadly duel, with Lanfear finally deciding to kill him after he swore he would never love a woman sworn to the Shadow. In perhaps one of the greatest battles in the series, Lanfear declared "if you are not mine you are dead" and overwhelmed Rand. Lanfear's near victory was due to Rand's inability to harm a woman, a white ivory angreal bracelet, and Lanfear's own rage which caused her to lash out directly at Rand. On the brink of death, Rand al'Thor was saved when Moiraine tackled Lanfear and physically pushed them both into a ter'angreal which cut them off from the world.

Lanfears first appearance is in The Great Hunt as she being mention in the a text written in blood in the Fal Dara jail after the trolloc raid.

Cyndane
For several books, Lanfear was believed to be dead. Although it has not been stated directly, Cyndane's hatred for Rand al'Thor and memories she has been shown to have, make it extremely likely that she is the reincarnation of Lanfear, the most powerful of the female Forsaken, and the only one to have been dead at the time. This is buttressed by the fact that Cyndane means "Last Chance" in the Old Tongue.

For reasons unknown, it has been demonstrated that Cyndane's strength in the One Power is less than Lanfear's was (though remarkably, still greater than Graendal's - a woman of great strength). However, her desire to prevent her former lover Lews Therin Telamon (in his current incarnation as the Dragon Reborn) from ever being happy with another woman has transferred intact. She is currently being controlled by Moridin by means of a mindtrap, which may be preventing her from acting on her previous notions of confronting the Dark One and the other Forsaken by acting in concert with al'Thor.

She is later spoted by Uno, a Shienarian soldier, in a window as Rand, Perrin, Mat and a group of Shienarian soldiers enters a empty village in their hunt for Padan Fain and the Horn of Valere which was stolen in Fal Dara.

When Rand, Hurin and Loial have accidently traveld to a mirror world and continues the hunt alone, they hear a female scream and finds a young woman fend off a monster, a Grolm, and Rand kills it with a arrow, the young woman introduces herself as Selene, a young noble woman from Cairhien, but in truth ins actully Lanfear using a disguise created by the One Power, she is constantly trying to seduce Rand but fails, when they return to the real world and are able to retrive the Horn of Valere, she tries make Rand blow it but he refuses. As they rest for the night in a village Selene disappears durring the night, leaving a note saying she will wait for Rand in Cairhien, the city.

As Rand and Loial are hunted by Trollocs in Cairhien suburbs, she appears again as Selene and tries to convince Rand to use the One Power to kill the Trollocs, but he refuses, as they take refuge in Illuminators compound she yet again disappears.

She appears again in the end of the book in her true form, when Min tries care for him as hes been injured by Ba'alzamon, she then says her name is Lanfear.

In Chapter 35 of Winter's Heart, there are instances of Cyndane's perspective where it states she was more powerful before her encounter with the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, whom Lanfear certainly met if she survived fighting Moiraine through the twisted red door ter'angreal, and mentions her intent to challenge both the Dark One and the Creator at the Dragon Reborn's side, which Lanfear proposed to him.

In The Dragon Reborn she appears in Perrins dreams trying to convince him to follow the path to greatness, but he then finds out who she is when he sees her speak with Ba'alzamon and he calls her Lanfear, she also appears twice in The White Tower, first she visit Mat after he have been healed from the dagger from Shadar Logoth, trying to convince him that she would lead him to power, wealth and glory and that the Aes Sedais might kill him, she then appears as Else, a novice, to tell Nynaeve, Elayne and Egwene where Liandrin, a Black Ajah Aes Sedai, and her companions items are stored, as Egwene runs she runs in to Lanfear without her disguise.

The morning after the fall of the Stone of Tear, as Moiraine, Nynaeve, Egwene, Elayne and Rhuarc have a meeting they receive a letter from Lanfear stating that she leaves Rand in their care until she returns to get him.

She appeared at the Cleansing of Saidin where she swore to kill Rand al'Thor yet again. She narrowly escaped the defenses mounted to protect him, and ended up dueling Alivia, an ex-Seanchan of great power and nearly 400 years of training as a damane. Despite the fact that she injured Alivia, she was repelled from the Cleansing, and saidin was successfully cleansed by the Dragon Reborn. In all Forsaken meetings, she flanks Moridin along with Moghedien. Her hatred for Rand al'Thor is greater than ever.

She dose not appear again until one year later, when she reveals her true identity for Rand and once again tries to convince him again to swear loyalty to the Dark One, but he refuses, Rand then again faces her in Stone of Tear when he is fight the invading Trollocs, she hints it might be her that sent the Trollocs that fights Sammaels Trollocs, its actully Semirhage who sent them.

As Rand and the Aiel travels towards Cold Rocks Hold they come across a merchant caravan, with it is Asmodean pretending to be a gleeman called Jasin Natael and Lanfear posing to be a large fat merchant women named Keille, she then appears in Rands dreams marking him by biting him in the throat.

As Rand reveals the truth about Aiels history she appears again and tells him what Asmodean have planed, when Rand later have defeated Asmodean in Rhuidean she come back and puts a shield on Asmodean so that he can teach Rand how to use the One Power without him getting the upper hand, she also tells him about the Choedan Kal and what they could do with it togheter.

In the beginning of The Fires of Heaven she travels to Caemlyn to meet Rahvin and forges a alliance with him, Samael and Graendal to capture Rand and turn him over to the Dark One, onces hes free.

She appears later in Rhuidean, telling Rand that the Darkhound he just killed was sent by Rahvin since the Forsaken is trying to put Queen Morgase on the Cairhien thrown, but it have be come harder since Rand have seen Tears army in to Cairhien to restore order.

Lanfear dose not appear again until after Rand saved Cairhien, the city, from Shaido, she then learns about what Rand and Aviendha have done and outraged by jealousy she attacks Rand and nearly kills him before Moiraine jumps in to her and they both falls throw a door shapet sa'angreal which leads to the Eelfinn world.
