Kamen Rider Drive (仮面ライダードライブ, Kamen Raidā Doraibu) is a Japanese tokusatsu drama in the Kamen Rider Series, written by Riku Sanjo. Police officer Shinnosuke Tomari is seemingly chosen by a strange car to become the titular hero Kamen Rider Drive to battle the Roidmudes, androids that wish to usurp humanity by using their abilities to control the acceleration of time.

The main cast of Kamen Rider Drive, including the Tridoron car that the lead character drives instead of a motorcycle. Background, left to right: Chase, Heart, Brain. Foreground, left to right: Jun Honganji, Shinnosuke Tomari, Kiriko Shijima.

Metropolitan Police's Special Investigations Division

The Metropolitan Police's Special Investigations Division (警視庁特状課, Keishichō Toku-jō-ka)[a] is in charge of investigating the strange happenings regarding the Roidmude and "Heaviness" within the city. This division is located inside Kuruma Driver's License Center (久瑠間運転免許試験場, Kuruma Unten Menkyo Shikenjō). They are assisted by Kamen Rider Drive, but very few on the force are aware of his identity. After the Roidmudes' (Banno's) case is over, the division is finally disbanded.

Shinnosuke Tomari

Shinnosuke Tomari (泊 進ノ介, Tomari Shinnosuke) is a young man who joined the Metropolitan Police to solve the mystery behind the death of his father Eisuke Tomari. But during the Global Freeze (グローバルフリーズ, Gurōbaru Furīzu), while tracking down a terrorist organization called Neo-Shade, Shinnosuke accidentally left partner Akira Hayase was critically wounded and lost his motivation as a police officer as he was transferred to the Special Investigations Division. When he encounters the Drive Driver, he secretly becomes the hero Kamen Rider Drive to fight the cause of the Global Freeze and the recent strange events occurring in the city, the Roidmudes. In time, Shinnosuke learns more about the arsenal at his disposal among other truths as he is joined by Go Shijima and later a restored Chase. Eventually, Shinnosuke is forced to publically reveal his Kamen Rider status and it results with the Roidmudes now targeting him. Once learning that the Roidmudes were involved in his father's death, Shinnosuke confronts the Freeze Roidmude in search for answers, just to be almost killed when the enemy achieves the Over-Evolved Form. After being revived by the Special Investigations Division, Shinnosuke not only manages to defeat and destroy Freeze, but succeeds in ultimately tracking down his father's true murder, Nira. After having Nira arrested for his crimes, Shinnosuke and his friends turn their focus on stopping the remaining Roidmudes from being a threat to mankind, by thwarting Prof. Banno's plan to use them to start a second Global Freeze. After the Special Investigations Division is disbanded, Shinnosuke is promoted to police sergeant and is transferred to the First Investigation Division. He later marries Kiriko and the two have a son named Eiji (英志).

As Kamen Rider Drive, instead of using a motorcycle like previous Kamen Riders, Shinnosuke's vehicle is the car Tridoron (トライドロン, Toraidoron) that has three modes and can achieve flight when it becomes Booster Tridoron (ブースタートライドロン, Būsutā Toraidoron) by combining with the Ride Boosters.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] In a fight, Drive uses the Shift Cars (シフトカー, Shifuto Kā) in conjunction with the Drive Driver (ドライブドライバー, Doraibu Doraibā) and the Shift Brace (シフトブレス, Shifuto Buresu) to use Tire Exchanges (タイヤ交換, Taiya Kōkan) at his disposal or transform from his basic Type Speed (タイプスピード, Taipu Supīdo) to alternate forms (known as "Types"): The strength-oriented Type Wild (タイプワイルド, Taipu Wairudo) and the accuracy-oriented Type Technic (タイプテクニック, Taipu Tekunikku). He also uses Handle-Ken (ハンドル剣, Handoru Ken) saber and the Door-Ju (ドア銃, Doa Jū) pistol.

  • Type Dead Heat (タイプデッドヒート, Taipu Deddo Hīto) is Drive's motorcycle and sidecar-based form. This form change can be shared with Mach and emulates Heart's Dead Zone ability. However, as this Shift Car is yet to be perfected, it has a serious drawback, leaving the user out of control and attacking anyone before him after a few minutes of use, until Mach overcomes this weakness with his own willpower, mastering the Dead Zone itself and using it exclusively after Drive obtains other stronger forms. In the film Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Super Movie War Genesis, Shinnosuke gets a Mach Driver Honoh from Professor Harley that allows him to transform into Kamen Rider Dead Heat Drive (仮面ライダーデッドヒートドライブ, Kamen Raidā Deddo Hīto Doraibu).
  • Type Formula (タイプフォーミュラ, Taipu Fōmyura) is Drive's Formula One car-based form that uses the Trailer-Hou (トレーラー砲, Torērā Hō) rifle that can unleash strong Full Throttle finishing attacks when combined with the Shift Cars as well.
  • Type Tridoron (タイプトライドロン, Taipu Toraidoron) is Drive's ultimate sports car-based form, adapting the mannerisms of Krim Steinbelt while converting the Tridoron into armor. In this form, Drive uses the Tire Blending (タイヤカキマゼール, Taiya Kakimazēru) ability to combine three Tire Exchange Shift Cars of a particular set into a singular Shift Tire with the combined powers of its components. Drive can also use all the weapons of his other forms, while allowing Mr. Belt to control his body when needed.
  • Type Fruits (タイプフルーツ, Taipu Furūtsu), exclusive in the film Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Drive & Gaim: Movie War Full Throttle, is accessed from the Shift Fruits Shift Car, created when Kamen Rider Gaim briefly shares a part of his "Man of Beginning" power with him. This form represents Gaim's Orange Arms' armor. In this form, his tire serving as sash, Drive gains the use of Gaim's Daidaimaru and Musou Saber weapons.
  • Type High Speed (タイプハイスピード, Taipu Hai Supīdo), exclusive in the Hyper Battle video, is a silver version of his Type Speed form. Despite being a stronger form, Type High Speed is revealed to be a simple recolor to serve as a placebo for Shinnosuke.
  • Type Special (タイプスペシャル, Taipu Supesharu), exclusive in the film Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future, is accessed from the Shift Next Special Shift Car. It was a gift from his future son, Eiji Tomari, through Kiriko. This form is the yellow version of the future Drive System that was used by Eiji Tomari. So when Shinnosuke first transforms into this mode, a holographic version of Eiji is seen with him.

In the film Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future, Shinnosuke uses the Mach Driver Honoh (borrowed from Chase) and the Tridoron Key (トライドロンキー, Toraidoron Kī) to transform into Kamen Rider Cho Dead Heat Drive (仮面ライダー超デッドヒートドライブ, Kamen Raidā Chō Deddo Hīto Doraibu, lit. "Super Dead Heat Drive"), a Mashin Chaser-based form. In the upcoming film, Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive: Super Movie War Genesis, when Shinnosuke travels back in time with Takeru Tenkūji, he transforms into Kamen Rider Zero Drive (仮面ライダーゼロドライブ, Kamen Raidā Zero Doraibu), a form showing the transition of Mr. Belt's technology from Kamen Rider Proto Drive and Kamen Rider Drive.[10]

She is the only one who actually knows that Shinnosuke is Kamen Rider Drive, and as such often assists him in battles as a sidekick. She is shown to be very athletic despite her looks and also has the habit of dragging Shinnosuke back to work when she finds him slacking off, often having him in handcuffs when she does so. Kiriko is later revealed to have had a history with Kamen Riders since the Global Freeze event when Proto Drive saved her from Roidmude 010, with Shinnosuke helping her overcome her phobia of the Roidmude when she faces him again in his Paint Roidmude form. Honganji is actually a very astute and perceptive police officer, with his goofy, incompetent and trouble-fearing attitude revealed to only be a clever facade. Along with establishing and keeping intact of the Special Investigations Division, his eager pleasing of his superiors has always been a front to dig for information regarding the Global Freeze event from the upper levels of the police force, and quickly leaked Shinnosuke's identity as Kamen Rider Drive soon after the young cop's public transformation to the mass media, judging that doing so would protect Shinnosuke from further schemes of the Roidmudes at this point. He later received a Mach Driver Production Model (量産型マッハドライバー, Ryōsan-gata Mahha Doraibā) and Tokujo-Ka Key (特状課キー, Tokujō-ka Kī) from Rinna, to become the first user of Kamen Rider Mach Production Model (量産型仮面ライダーマッハ, Ryōsan-gata Kamen Raidā Mahha), dubbing himself Kamen Rider Jun (仮面ライダー純, Kamen Raidā Jun). Like original Mach, this form can open the helmet however, the helmet can reveals the face of civilian identity. It turns out, the device itself was revealed to be in the prototype stage, as Honganji was unable to move in a few seconds later. During the Global Freeze, Mr. Belt worked with Proto Zero to fight the Roidmudes before his previous partner's assumed death. Mr. Belt upgraded the Kamen Rider Drive arsenal to its current state by the time Shinnosuke found him, deeming the human a perfect candidate because of his nature to act first without any hesitation and with the proper guidance and advice, would be a major force in future battles. When not in use inside the Tridoron, Mr. Belt sits upon a station-pump like stand inside the Tridoron's Drive Pit, located in the basement of the Kuruma Driver's License Center. He later obtains the ability of temporarily assuming control of Kamen Rider Drive's body and fight in his place while the Kamen Rider assumed his Type Tridoron form. After discovering that Banno is still alive in his tablet state, he is still disappointing at him and recalling their feud.

In the summer movie Surprise Drive, Mr. Belt somehow becomes evil and creates a body in the image of his human self as Steinbelt to bring about a dystopian future of 2035 by using the Roidmudes to ruling humanity with Kamen Rider Dark Drive as his right hand. However, it was later revealed to be an impersonation of another Roidmude who also copied his appearance, Paradox (like disguising as Eiji). Meanwhile, the present Mr. Belt became corrupted by an evil chip Banno implanted (originally meant for Roidmudes) while kidnapping in episode 40 prior to the movie, thus pleading Shinnosuke to destroy him to prevent the dystopian future. Though destroyed, he was revived again by Shinnosuke using the Tridoron Key, and had the evil chip removed. Though sacrificing Medic fails, the Signal Circular is completed, and he had 004 self-destruct after he is defeated by Drive Type Tridoron. He then set the Special Situation Defence Center (特殊状況下防衛センター, Tokushu Jōkyōka Bōei Sentā) building as Promised Land. After killing Chase, his Roidmude body is destroyed, and became weakened by Chaser form of Mach during their last battle, as he is later destroyed in his Driver form by his son via Chase's Shingou Ax, in similar manner how Shinnosuke did to Krim, for the sake of Krim himself and to prevent the dystopian future in Surprise Future movie event, ended Banno's evil reign for good, not only avenging the death of Chase, also the Roidmude whom Banno made into a victim, including his wife's heart, in which Banno had done on her badly prior their children's birth.

While within Brain's tablet, Banno has the ability to manipulate data in various ways. He can produce tentacles that can attack and deliver painful electric shocks, heal people infected by Roidmudes by restoring their bodies to normal, and he can even produce a digital shield to protect people from Roidmude attacks. As Kamen Rider Gord Drive, his appearance is based on both versions of Drive Type Speeds, such as the current Drive Type Speed helmet and Proto Drive's body armor, while his power is similar to that of an Over-Evolved Roidmude, or rather, he himself is the Over-Evolved Roidmude, and is able steal the arsenal of compatible Kamen Riders, including the Shift Cars and Signal Bikes, until Rinna develops a special data coating that protects them from falling under his control, yet except the miscellaneous arsenals of the Kamen Riders still can be stolen.

Tenjuro Banno is voiced by Masakazu Morita (森田 成一, Morita Masakazu), also portrays the original body of Banno.

Roidmude

The Roidmudes (ロイミュード, Roimyūdo) are android beings that wish to usurp humanity as Earth's dominant species. Designed by Professor Banno as life forms capable of evolution like humans, his friend and colleague, Krim, provided him with the necessary prototype Core Driviars to complete their development. Estimated at 108 constructed, purposely programmed by Banno to attack humans, the Roidmudes rebelled against their creator upon activation and began a full-scale attack on the planet in an event called the Global Freeze, which turns out was actually a set up for Banno's plan, after managing to transfer his mind into the tablet, with a stolen Krim's mind uploading technology. The Roimudes are responsible for the phenomenon officially known as Heavy Acceleration (重加速, Jūkasoku) (publicly referred to as "Heaviness" (どんより, Don'yori)), described as the sudden physical sensation of slowed time causing extraordinary decelerated movement. The Roidmudes can use devices called Viral Cores (バイラルコア, Bairaru Koa) for the purpose of sustaining, empowering, and evolving their existence.

There are three natural phases in a Roidmude's evolution: Minor Roidmude (下級ロイミュード, Kakyū Roimyūdo) forms, Advanced Roidmude (上級ロイミュード, Jōkyū Roimyūdo) forms called Evolved Forms (進化態, Shinkatai), and Giant Roidmude (巨大ロイミュード, Kyodai Roimyūdo) forms. The Minor Roidmudes come in three variations: Cobra-Type (コブラ型, Kobura-gata), Spider-Type (スパイダー型, Supaidā-gata), and Bat-Type (バット型, Batto-gata). But each Minor Roidmude is set apart from others of the same type by a unique breastplate holding their numbers, the essence of the Roidmudes called Cores (コア, Koa). As long as the Core is not destroyed, a Roidmude can revive with a Viral Core. If these Roidmudes copy the appearances and memories of their targets and gather enough information, they can evolve into Advanced Roidmudes. Unlike Minor Roidmudes, Advanced Roidmudes developed a very distinct personality that reflects their unique appearance, and are also able to produce a Heavy Acceleration that affects large parts of the city. If the Roidmudes use more than one Viral Core at one time, they can change into Giant Roidmudes that resemble their respective Viral Cores. As they are currently operating in the shadows to fulfill an ultimate agenda that requires four Over-Evolved Roidmudes, any Roidmude deemed a threat to their goal will be tried by Brain, Medic and Heart, and if necessary, be dealt with by Chase to be reformatted back into a Minor Roidmude.

After Chase defects to the Kamen Riders' side, the Roidmudes gain a new method of evolution from the Neo Viral Cores (ネオバイラルコア, Neo Bairaru Koa) that Freeze developed. Use of a Neo Viral Core allows a Minor Roidmude to fuse onto a human host body to instantly assume a red-colored Advanced form called a Fusion Evolved Form (融合進化態, Yūgō Shinkatai) through the symbiosis, forcing the Kamen Riders to separate them before destroying the Roidmude without risking the host's life.

If a Roidmude's certain emotion intensifies and exceeds the limit, the Roidmude can evolve into a gold-colored ultimate Advanced form called an Over-Evolved Form (超進化態, Chō Shinkatai) and their main objective includes having at least four of them achieving such state at the same time thus reaching their "Promised Number". So far Freeze, Brain, Heart, Medic and Banno's Gord Drive form had achieved the Over-Evolution, but with Freeze's death by Kamen Rider Drive's hands, and Brain being on the run from Banno, they are still one Roidmude short from their goal, which is Banno's goal all along, in repeating another Global Freeze, but unlike the first Global Freeze, Banno takes the lead in a flesh, and the phenomenal will be worldwide, instead of a North East side of Asia (particularly Japan, Korea and Russia). After Brain surrendered himself, as it meant to get undercover with Heart to save Medic and without any option to follows Gord Drive's play, Gord Drive utilize a ball called Sigma Circular, which activates a Global Freeze through worldwide, using the power of the four Over-Evolved Roidmudes, with one of the three Roidmude as a sacrifice, which was originally meant for Medic, until Brain takes his nail instead, to save her life, as the Riders' rescue to save most of the endangered Roidmudes and stop Banno from achieving his goal was too late.

Heart

Heart (ハート, Hāto), or rather the Heart Roidmude (ハートロイミュード, Hāto Roimyūdo), is an imposing figure always wearing a red trench coat, serving as leader of the Roidmudes stationed in Japan after the Global Freeze. Originally Roidmude 002 (Spider-Type), his human guise modeled after a businessman who refused to invest in Banno's research. He has a jovial and showy figure who likes referring fellow Roidmudes as friends. He has the ability to activate the Dead Zone (デッドゾーン, Deddo Zōn), an uncontrollable overwhelming power. Prior to assuming his current form and capturing Proto Drive, he murdered his creator and Krim, unaware that two survived through their minds transferred into items. Heart's emotional stimulant is the joy he finds in facing a worthy opponent, and Heart finds such key person in Shinnosuke, not only for his strength, but for his honor, eventually achieving the Over-Evolution when recognizing him as an equal. When Heart learned of Banno's survival, he made it his principle concern to deal with the threat his creator poses. When chasing Banno, Chase now understand Heart's reason on hating human was because of Banno commonly, offering Heart to reconcile each other and set things right to stop Banno's madness, but Heart refused his offer and prefer doing his own way due to their conflict in the first Global Freeze. After Medic is being reprogrammed into by Banno, while sacrificing his life into a weakened state to save the Riders for Medic's life, Heart was then captured by Banno, but Heart already planned to prevent the mad scientist's evil plan on telling Brain to hide somewhere safe. However, as Gord Drive brought a Grim Reaper Roidmude as another hostage, Heart was forced to work with him, and tell where Brain is and follow Gord Drive's play to save Medic. After Brain's sacrifice to save Medic's life during a process of the Sigma Circular activation by Gord Drive is completed, Heart helps the Riders fight Banno and destroy Sigma. Once Sigma is destroyed, Heart decides to settle things with Shinnosuke due to the mortal wound inflicted on him during the battle. But Shinnosuke, knowing the truth, instead makes his peace with the dying Roidmude.

Heart's human form is portrayed by Tomoya Warabino (蕨野 友也, Warabino Tomoya), who also portrays the businessman he was modeled after.

Brain

Brain (ブレン, Buren), or rather the Brain Roidmude (ブレンロイミュード, Buren Roimyūdo), is responsible for collecting and managing information of the Roidmudes. Originally Roidmude 003 (Bat-Type), Brain copied the identity of the intelligence agency's programming deputy director Mitsuharu Kineta (杵田 光晴, Kineta Mitsuharu) while escaping into the cyberspace to evade Proto Drive during the Global Freeze. He has a stoic and no-nonsense personality, and detests chaos. His human guise wears an academic-like dress. As such, he is irritated by the fact that all Advanced Roidmudes are those with brash, disorderly personalities and is in charge of reformatting those that Chase has captured. He sees Kamen Rider Drive as dangerous to their goals. He has the ability to inflict attacks on his target's nervous system. He is able to hack into nearby technology by tapping on his glasses. He despises any unruly behavior, even amongst his comrades and is constantly irked by the idea that the unruly ones tend to be more powerful. Brain also serves as Heart's advisor but is wary of Medic's increasing influence towards him, leading to him being overcome with envy, which Freeze revealed to be Brain's emotional stimulant. Brain later assumes the alias of Sou Noumi (能見 壮, Nōmi Sō)[e] after siding with Freeze, presenting himself as a consultant from Paranormal Science Institute sent to review the Special Investigations Division to trick Shinnosuke into attacking him so he would be suspended for attacking a human. After Freeze's demise, Brain decides to assume his Over-Evolved Form by using a Neo Viral Core to form a symbiosis with Nira to use the human's envy towards Eisuke Tomari as a booster agent. It took all three Kamen Riders to defeat Brain, his number surviving before he is subjected to torture by Medic, until he regained his old body back. He witnesses Banno's awakening as Gord Drive in horror, apologizing to Heart while warning him that Medic is under Banno's brainwashing, Brain goes on the run to keep himself from being used by Banno in the second Global Freeze, while under Special Investigations Division's protection. But Brain decides to help Heart save Medic by allowing himself to be captured, sacrificing his life to save her from being used to activate the Sigma Circular.

During the first Global Freeze incident, she found Misuzu and her dog, Shō dying because of Igarashi's crime, heals her besides mimicking her appearance and emotional mind, then heals and took care of her dog, which cause Misuzu became amnesia and mute for her missing dog, and affects any patients who lost their dogs too. In later night, she found an injured Heart, and taking care of him under her care. However, when the first Global Freeze incident is over, Medic ended up in a coma sometime after evolving into her current state, while restoring all of the Roidmudes' physical body, but before she was revived by the Volt Roidmude's actions. When Chase almost regained his memories as Proto Drive, unable to alter his Core, Medic uses her power to instead modify his programming to have him serve as the Roidmudes' defender while establishing the Grim Reaper Unit to take over Chase's former duties. According to Freeze, Medic's emotional stimulant is "devotion", possibly out of her willing to please Heart. She later uses her fellow Roidmudes (especially the Grim Reaper Unit), as shields or scapegoats that Drive will destroy it, though this was later scolded by Heart. Despite being a heartless Roidmude, she has Misuzu's kinder side intact in her, such as petting Shou, and revealed the twist of Medic's personality, was because she synchronized a twisted emotions from other Roidmudes' synchronized emotional mind. Her personality of being changed from Angel or Devil affects her human synchronized form outfits as well. After Banno transferred himself into his own Drive Driver, Medic became one of Banno's victim into his madness. She attempt to rescue Misuzu from Igarashi's attempt murder, whom the Riders thought she is a murder who tried to kill Misuzu, and Igarashi was a boyfriend of Misuzu, until Drive hears from Medic on Misuzu's memories she synchronized, Misuzu never had a boyfriend like Igarashi, which led the Special Investigations Division found the evidence of Igarashi's crime thanks to Medic's help. Despite being manipulated by Banno, as Shinnosuke is trying to pleads Medic to stop her madness, her will of loyalty towards Heart has gifted her an Over-Evolved Form. However, she was reprogrammed by Banno and turned into his obedient puppet upon attacking anyone (even Heart) at his commands. During her abduction by Banno, it is revealed that Banno turned her into a vessel for a sacrifice on Sigma Circular activation. After Brain sacrificed his life to save Medic, Medic regained her sense and mourn his death. As the time comes, but was too late of having the Sigma Circular completed, Heart and Medic finally made their moves to destroy Banno, and reconcile with the Riders, as they are now focus only one evil person who is a potential threat to world, Banno. During a raid in assisting the Riders to destroy Banno and his Sigma Circular, Medic is still weak due to the damage she received from the circular's sacrificial when she was brainwashed shortly until Brain took the bullet for her, telling Heart and Drive to go on without her, as she may catch up with them soon. Once resurrected in his Over-Evolved Form, Freeze puts Shinnosuke on the brink of death. However, he is later overpowered and destroyed by Drive once he is revived and transforms into Type Tridoron. Freeze was originally believed to be the one responsible for Eisuke's death, but confesses that he was not the culprit in his last words. Despite confessing himself on not murdering Eisuke, Freeze was secretly involved in Eisuke's last crime fighting, witnessing Eisuke's murderer is none other than Eisuke's own partner, Mitsuhide Nira, whom later became Freeze's colleague until he betrays him recently, without revealing Nira's involvement in Eisuke's death to public, leading Shinnosuke and co. investigate it the mysteries by themselves, after Freeze's death at Drive Type Tridoron's hand. Rider 3 denies Drive's empathy, which would led his lose the race. After losing the race to Drive, with the support of the civilians and his allies, Rider 3 accept his loss to Drive in sportsmanship. Apparently, the Great Leader fed up his lost, taking Rider 3 into a vessel to activate Rider Robo, to attack the surviving Riders, and those who defied Shocker. As Kyoichiro's conscious has a remaining willpower left, he sent the original Double Riders to the future to restore the Shocker Riders' memories into Kamen Riders, until the Great Leader has gone too far on erasing most of the Riders into a data from their existence, Rider 3 manage to break himself free later assists the other Kamen Riders in their battle against Shocker.
