Kamen Rider Ghost (仮面ライダーゴースト, Kamen Raidā Gōsuto) is a Japanese tokusatsu drama in the Kamen Rider Series, written by Takuro Fukuda.

Daitenkū-ji

Daitenkū-ji (大天空寺)[a] is a fictional Buddhist temple in Kamen Rider Ghost which has been taken care of by the Tenkūji family for generations. It is the home and base of operations for the series' main characters.

Takeru Tenkūji

Takeru Tenkūji (天空寺 タケル, Tenkūji Takeru) is an 18-year-old man who is the current heir to Daitenkū-ji. Ten years earlier, his father left him home as he went on a ghost hunting expedition. Before his father apparently died, he sent Takeru a gift of the tsuba from Miyamoto Musashi's katana which he wears on a necklace. As well as his interest in Miyamoto Musashi, Takeru enjoys reading from a book titled Stories of the World's Greatest People (世界偉人伝, Sekai Ijinden) and learning about the history and legends of famous historical figures. Wishing to follow in his father's footsteps as a ghost hunter, Takeru laments being unable to see ghosts, which neither Akari nor Onari believe exist, until he receives an item called an Eyecon (眼魂(アイコン), Aikon)[b] on his 18th birthday, a gift meant for him should his father have truly died. This allows him to see the monstrous ghosts known as Gamma who then attack and kill him, as they are after the Eyecon themselves. He is brought back to life by a mysterious hermit who grants him the ability to transform into Kamen Rider Ghost to fight the Gamma. The hermit tells Takeru he has 99 days to gather the 15 Eyecons of great men from history in order to fully come back to life through the Eyecon Gate in his bedroom, as the hermit's magic is not powerful enough to truly restore him to life.

As Kamen Rider Ghost, Takeru uses the Ghost Driver (ゴーストドライバー, Gōsuto Doraibā) and the Ghost Eyecons to transform. Without an accompanying Eyecon containing the spirit of himself, or a historical figure, Kamen Rider Ghost remains in a form called Transient (トランジェント, Toranjento) which lacks any powers. However, the Eyecons call upon a spirit which takes the form of a Hoodie Ghost (パーカーゴースト, Pākā Gōsuto) and transforms Kamen Rider Ghost into one of his Damashii ()[c] forms. When he finds the spirit of an historical figure, it can become another Eyecon and grant Kamen Rider Ghost new powers:[1]

  • Ore Damashii (オレ魂) is the primary form of Kamen Rider Ghost, orange in color, accessed from the Eyecon which contains Takeru's own soul, whose main attack is the Omega Drive (オメガドライブ, Omega Doraibu) Rider Kick.
  • Musashi Damashii (ムサシ魂), red in color, gives Kamen Rider Ghost expert sword-fighting skills. Musashi Damashii's primary Gan Gun Saber weapon mode is a Dual Blade Mode, whose main attack is the Omega Slash (オメガスラッシュ, Omega Surasshu).
  • Edison Damashii (エジソン魂, Ejison Damashii), yellow in color, gives Kamen Rider Ghost the ability to control electrical energy, making him immune to electrical attacks as well as allowing him to absorb electricity to power his own attacks. Edison Damashii's Gan Gun Saber weapon mode is Gun Mode, whose main attack is the Omega Shoot (オメガシュート, Omega Shūto).
  • Robin Damashii (ロビン魂), green in color, gives Kamen Rider Ghost expert archery skills. Robin Damashii's Gan Gun Saber weapon mode is utilized with the Condor Denwor (コンドルデンワー, Kondoru Denwā)[d] to transform the weapon into Arrow Mode, whose main attack is the Omega Strike (オメガストライク, Omega Sutoraiku).
  • Newton Damashii (ニュートン魂, Nyūton Damashii), blue in color, gives Kamen Rider Ghost the ability to control gravity. As Newton Damashii, he is armed with a pair of gravity-controlling orbs that he can use as boxing gloves.
  • Beethoven Damashii (ベートーベン魂, Bētōben Damashii), gray in color, gives Kamen Rider Ghost control over sound and music. He is able to manipulate soundwaves to form an invisible wall around him that can even be used to reflect attacks back at the enemy.
  • Billy the Kid Damashii (ビリー・ザ・キッド魂, Birī Za Kiddo Damashii), brown in color, gives Kamen Rider Ghost sharpshooting skills. In this form, he either dual wields the Gan Gun Saber and the Bat Clock (バットクロック, Batto Kurokku) in Gun Mode or combines them into the Gan Gun Saber's Rifle Mode for the Omega Impact (オメガインパクト, Omega Inpakuto) attack.
  • Benkei Damashii (ベンケイ魂), white in color, gives Kamen Rider Ghost superstrength. While in this form, Kamen Rider Ghost can combine the Gan Gun Saber with the Kumo Lantern (クモランタン, Kumo Rantan, Spider Lantern) to become Hammer Mode, with which he can perform the Omega Bomber (オメガボンバー, Omega Bonbā) finisher.
  • Kamehameha Damashii (カメハメハ魂), yellow and red in color, which is exclusive to the Kamen Rider: Ganbarizing arcade game.[2]

Kamen Rider Ghost's main weapon is the Gan Gun Saber (ガンガンセイバー, Gan Gan Seibā), which has multiple modes depending on which Damashii form Kamen Rider Ghost has taken, except in some Damashii forms which have their own unique weapons, such as those from Newton Damashii. His motorcycle is a Honda CRF250L called the Machine Ghostriker (マシンゴーストライカー, Mashin Gōsutoraikā), which can combine with the Captain Ghost (キャプテンゴースト, Kyaputen Gōsuto) flying ghost ship to become the Iguana Ghostriker (イグアナゴーストライカー, Iguana Gōsutoraikā).

Takeru Tenkūji is portrayed by Shun Nishime (西銘 駿, Nishime Shun).[3] As a child, Takeru is portrayed by Hinata Yamada (山田 日向, Yamada Hinata).

Akari Tsukimura

Akari Tsukimura (月村 アカリ, Tsukimura Akari) is Takeru's childhood friend, although she is one year older at 19. She is currently a college student majoring in physics. She finds it difficult to believe in any of the supernatural activity happening around her, even after Takeru dies and is brought back to life to be Kamen Rider Ghost. She assures herself that there is always a rational explanation for what has happened, even Takeru's resurrection, and particularly now that she too has seen Gamma after handling the Musashi Eyecon temporarily. Sometime later, she stumbles into Takeru's room and sees the gate there, and Takeru tells her that he has 99 days left or he will be dead for good. With the hermit's help, she develops a special spray called "SHIRANUI" that allows her to see ghosts like Kamen Rider Ghost and the Gammas without needing an Eyecon. The hermit warns Akari that the SHIRANUI spray's effects are very limited, particularly when there is very little left, and it is up to her to keep developing more of the SHIRANUI formula on her own. She is later given the Kumo Lantern, which can be used in place of the SHIRANUI formula to allow her to see Kamen Rider Ghost and Gammas with its flames.

Akari Tsukimura is portrayed by Hikaru Ohsawa (大沢 ひかる, Ōsawa Hikaru).[3] As a child, Akari is portrayed by Chinami Yoshioka (吉岡 千波, Yoshioka Chinami).

Onari

Onari (御成) is a 26-year-old Buddhist priest who is the current caretaker of Daitenkū-ji, as Takeru is still too young to handle the role himself. While both he and Akari witness Takeru's death and resurrection, Onari is more open to believing in the supernatural, much to Akari's chagrin. He is not spiritually aware enough to see Gamma, nor has he ever had an Eyecon to see them either, but the SHIRANUI spray and the Kumo Lantern allow him to see spirits like Kamen Rider Ghost and the Gammas.

Onari is portrayed by Takayuki Yanagi (柳 喬之, Yanagi Takayuki).[3]

Shibuya

Shibuya (シブヤ) is an ascetic monk training at Daitenkū-ji. He helps Onari and Takeru track down Eyecons by investigating in the city, but often jumps to conclusions that cause more harm than good.

Narita (ナリタ) is another ascetic monk at Daitenkū-ji. He is assigned to work alongside Shibuya in investigating paranormal phenomena in the city, but is more laidback.

Narita is portrayed by Reo Kansyuji (勧修寺 玲旺, Kanshūji Reo).[3]

Yasushi Onodera

Yasushi Onodera (小野寺 靖, Onodera Yasushi) is the local mailman who serves Daitenkū-ji. He also helps Takeru out in finding Eyecons, as he can travel throughout the city more easily than either Shibuya or Narita. Before Takeru's father, Ryu dies at the hands of the Gamma, Onodera was, told by him to send the Eyecon he found earlier, which was meant for a birthday of his son, Takeru, once the boy has grown up well.

Yasushi Onodera is portrayed by Yasuomi Sano (佐野 泰臣, Sano Yasuomi)

A mysterious hermit (仙人, sennin) is the one who brings Takeru back to life and instructs him on how to become Kamen Rider Ghost. Takeru believes him to be a god, but the hermit denies this. After helping Takeru, the hermit takes up residence in the basement of Daitenkū-ji to keep watch on Takeru as he seeks out the remaining Eyecons.

The hermit is portrayed by Naoto Takenaka (竹中 直人, Takenaka Naoto).[3]

Ryū Tenkūji

Ryū Tenkūji (天空寺 龍, Tenkūji Ryū) is Takeru's father and the previous caretaker of Daitenkū-ji. Ten years ago he left on a ghost hunting expedition with his old friends Chikara Saionji and Professor Igarashi on researching the Eyecon monolith, and came across an Eyecon. Along the way, Ryū discovered the existence of the Gammas and was worried that if the research continued, the Gammas will be unleashed upon the world. Ryū leads the expedition to try to save Makoto and Kanon Fukami from the Gamma's world, but when he fails, he informs Professor Igarashi that he should find somewhere safe to live and wait for his son Takeru to grow up and then seek out his help. Some time later, Ryū is killed by a Gamma, but before he dies he sends off the tsuba from Miyamoto Musashi's sword to Takeru and instructs his son to learn about history's greatest heroes. He also ensures that Takeru will be sent the Ghost Eyecon upon his 18th birthday.

Professor Igarashi

Professor Igarashi (五十嵐博士, Igarashi-hakase) is Ryū Tenkūji's old research associate into the Eyecons and Gammas. He sought a way to save the Fukami siblings from the Eyecon monolith but was unsuccessful 10 years in the past. In the present day, Takeru tracks him down for help, which reignites his passion in the research to save the two, unaware that Makoto has freed himself and Kanon remains trapped in some fashion. He is targeted by the Green Dragon Blade Gamma because he still has the Benkei Ghost Eyecon, which he soon gives to Takeru.

Professor Igarashi is portrayed by Moro Morooka (モロ師岡).

Fukami siblings

The Fukami siblings are childhood friends of Takeru and Akari. Ryū Tenkūji treated them like they were his own children, and was distraught when the two were absorbed into an Eyecon monolith as a result of the experiments by himself, Chikara Saionji, and Professor Igarashi. Everyone close to the children kept their escape on their minds for the following 10 years, until it is revealed they are still alive, although Kanon's body remains trapped, and now her brother Makoto seeks out the Eyecons to restore her from an Eyecon to her original body.

Makoto Fukami

Makoto Fukami (深海 マコト, Fukami Makoto) is another ghost hunter who has a similar ability as Kamen Rider Ghost, such as utilizing the Ghost Driver, to transform into Kamen Rider Specter (仮面ライダースペクター, Kamen Raidā Supekutā), using his own Specter Eyecon. He is a rational, theoretical, and cool man who is also after Eyecons, including Kamen Rider Ghost's Eyecons, for his purpose which is still unknown. Unlike Takeru, Makoto is still alive. When he appears, he steals the Nobunaga Ghost Eyecon from Kamen Rider Ghost just as he has been able to find it. Aran and Makoto appear to have a history between them however, but so do Takeru and Makoto, as it is revealed that Makoto is one of his childhood friends who disappeared years ago. As a child, he and his younger sister Kanon were taken into another dimension by an Eyecon monolith due to an experiment. Both made it back out, but Kanon's body remains trapped, prompting Makoto to collect the Eyecons, with the help of Aran to bring her body back to the mortal world while her soul is trapped in the Eyecon, but unaware that Aran and Saionji had been using Makoto as a pawn to further their evil plan.

  • Specter Damashii (スペクター魂, Supekutā Damashii) is the primary form of Kamen Rider Specter, blue in color, accessed from the Eyecon with a same name of an unknown spectre soul. This form gives him increased speed.
  • Nobunaga Damashii (ノブナガ魂), purple in color, gives Kamen Rider Specter the power of the Sixth Heavenly Demon King and expert marksman. This form's mode for the Gan Gun Hand is Gun Mode, which has the finishing move Omega Spark (オメガスパーク, Omega Supāku).
  • Tutankhamun Damashii (ツタンカーメン魂, Tsutankāmen Damashii), cyan in color, empowers Kamen Rider Specter with the spirit of the boy king. Tutankhamun's Gan Gun Hand mode is accessed with the Cobra Keitai (コブラケータイ, Kobura Kētai), transforming it into Scythe Mode and its finishing move is the Omega Fang (オメガファング, Omega Fangu).

Kamen Rider Specter's main weapon is the Gan Gun Hand (ガンガンハンド, Gan Gan Hando), which like Kamen Rider Ghost's Gan Gun Saber takes on different modes depending on which Damashii form Kamen Rider Specter has taken. The default Rod Mode's finishing move is the Omega Smash (オメガスマッシュ, Omega Sumasshu).

Kanon Fukami

Kanon Fukami (深海 カノン, Fukami Kanon) is Makoto's younger sister who has been trapped in a Gamma Eyecon called the "Little Sister Eyecon" (妹眼魂, Imōto Aikon) as she and Makoto were both transported into an Eyecon monolith years ago, and while he made it back to the living world, she did not. For now, her soul is held within the Eyecon until Makoto can figure out how to bring her body back to the mortal world.

Kanon Fukami is portrayed by Mio Kudo (工藤 美桜, Kudō Mio). As a child, the character is portrayed by Yui Segizawa (堰沢 結衣, Segizawa Yui).

Gamma

The Gamma (眼魔(ガンマ), Ganma)[e] are extra-dimensional creatures that appear as ghosts in the physical world. They have been summoned by Saionji to fill some unknown purpose in our world. Each Gamma has a Gamma Eyecon that it uses on an object in the physical world to take on a more powerful form than its Primal Body (素体, Mototai) called Gamma Assault (眼魔アサルト, Ganma Asaruto). Stronger Gamma are served by Gamma Commandos (眼魔コマンド, Ganma Komando) whose Eyecons lack the energy needed to become more powerful. When absorbing the wild Hoodie Ghost, if the Riders didn't catch it quickly into an Eyecon, the Stronger Gamma will become a monstrous Giant Gamma (巨大眼魔, Kyodai Ganma). In order for Kamen Rider Ghost to free the Hoodie Ghost and capture it in an Eyecon, he must first defeat the Giant Gamma to separate both the stronger Gamma and the Hoodie Ghost that the monster has absorbed. Gammas also have the ability possess living humans.

Chikara Saionji

Chikara Saionji (西園寺 主税, Saionji Chikara), previously referred to as a mysterious man (謎の男, nazo no otoko), summons and controls the Gamma to do his bidding. He too seeks Eyecons, but for an unknown evil purpose. Ten years ago he was a former friend of Ryū Tenkūji and studied the Gammas alongside him. He regrets how he betrayed his old friend, in ways that are yet to be explained, and how he has since aligned himself with Aran. Besides Takeru, Saionji also knows the Fukami siblings when all of them were children ten years prior. He is in possession of the Billy the Kid Eyecon, until it falls into Kamen Rider Ghost's hands, as well as five others that he keeps in a briefcase.

Chikara Saionji is portrayed by Yoshiyuki Morishita (森下 能幸, Morishita Yoshiyuki).[3]

Aran

Aran (アラン) is a young man who appears to be Saionji's partner, who is himself aware of the Gamma and Eyecons. His true intentions are unknown. He does seem to know who Makoto Fukami is as Kamen Rider Specter, but the truth behind their shared past is still unknown. Though it is known along with Saionji, Aran has been using Makoto as a pawn to further their evil plans.

Aran is portrayed by Hayato Isomura (磯村 勇斗, Isomura Hayato).
