This is a list of the highest prices paid for paintings. Very valuable paintings, if sold, are usually sold at auctions.▼
Most of the world's most famous paintings are owned by museums, which very rarely sell them. As such, they are quite literally priceless; if a painting like the Mona Lisa were to become available, it would almost certainly sell for much more than any of the paintings listed below. Guinness World Records lists the Mona Lisa as having the highest insurance value for a painting in history. It was assessed at US$100 million on December 14, 1962, before the painting toured the U.S. for several months. However, the Louvre chose to spend the money on security rather than insurance. Taking inflation into account, the 1962 value would be approximately US$670 million in 2006. <!--This sum calculated by the inflation calculator at http://minneapolisfed.org/research/data/us/calc/--><!--Why do you need such precise number if you are already declaring it approximate? All the digits add no value.-->▼

Note - this list is ordered by inflation-adjusted value in United States dollars. A list in another currency would probably be in a slightly different order due to exchange rate fluctuations. ▼

Notes
*The numbers are not adjusted for current exchange rates at the sale of the painting.
*† - Japanese businessman Ryoei Saito purchased both Portrait of Dr. Gachet (van Gogh) and Au Moulin de la Galette (Renoir) in 1990.▼
*In October 2006, Steve Wynn agreed to sell Pablo Picasso's 1932 painting Le Reve to Steven A. Cohen for $139 million, but Wynn accidentally elbowed a hole in the middle of the canvas, thus scuppering the sale. The sale would have made La Reve the most expensive painting at the time.
