In September 2004, Louise Outing (born 1910) of Massachusetts won $5.6 million in the lottery's Megabucks game. She was 94 years old at the time. However, according to lottery regulations, the prize could only be paid in 20 annual payments, unlike almost all jackpot numbers games, including Mega Millions (which is played in Massachusetts) or Powerball, which give winners a cash option. Outing, unwilling to sell the annuity for less than the actual cash value of $3.5 million, unsuccessfully sued to receive the prize in lump sum.
