I started the article. This technique is being used in new malware. I haven't had much time to work on this. There are TONS of research papers that can be found by googling this article's name and looking for PDF files in particular.

I had an initial misunderstanding about this which caused me to look into it further. I think it should be pointed out that "generating a domain name" is not the same as registering a domain. It did not make sense to me how 50,000 domains could be economically or automatically registered every day, which is what I thought was the implication (because isn't the DNS system regulated?). I looked into it further and found one of the references to explain, "From the point of view of botnet owner, the economics work out quite well. They only have to register one or a few domains out of the several domains that each bot would query every day." (the 'Detecting Algorithimically Generated Malicious Domain Names', Sandeep Yadav reference). I feel this point should be clarified in the wikipedia article.
