You're playing a bit with the definition of "Irish Americans", which has a different meaning relating to communities which descended from 19th century immigrants. That's as much about identity as anything as else. Regarding his name, Wikipedia doesn't cite other encyclopaedias, and Britannica style is to use the Anglicised version of the name.
