Pure nitrogen gas is used mainly to keep oxygen out. Nitrogen compounds are used in fertilizers, war chemicals, and of course very widely in biology and medicine. Nitrogen is one of those things that is everywhere dispite being quite uncommon in the Earth's crust and quite hard to get out of the atmosphere.
