If I understood the question well, it refers to Muhammad's family as a whole, not his children. :The daughter of the prophet is married to Ali ibn Abu Talib... and there children are descendants, this is like our Prophet Jesus who there is hadiths saying he is a decendent of Prophet Ismael.
