Season 4 of the American dramedy television series Ugly Betty was confirmed in the ABC lineup, which was picked up for a full season on April 23, 2009.[1] The season premiere will air October 16, 2009. In Australia, Season 4 has not been slated by the Seven Network yet. Season 4 of Ugly Betty will start in the United Kingdom in January 2010.

Cast
Most of the main cast from the show's third season will return for the fourth season, with the former main character Christina McKinney (played by Ashley Jensen) becoming a recurring character. Yaya DaCosta has taken over the recurring role of Nico Slater, who was played in the first season by Jowharah Jones. Max Ehrich, who played Justin's classmate Randy, confirmed on his Twitter account that he'll return under recurring status.[2]

Plot
Kristen Johnston revealed that she would play the character, Helen. She quoted that she will be like Amanda in her later years in a tragic way. Justin attended a performing arts high school and his sexuality will slowly start evolving. Marc and Amanda's love lives will be explored, along with Amanda finally discovering her knack for fashion and Marc seeking revenge on Betty after being denied the features editor's job. Betty's braces will come off and it is expected that her romance with Matt will continue but with some obstacles that will await them. A former flame will return to woo Hilda but Betty could stand in her way. The adoption paper that Claire burns will be discussed as well. It's rumored that she will search her "secret" son along with Amanda for her father. Wilhelmina will be struggling with her search for Conner, but have to face bigger problems when Nico is involved in a "murder mystery" that will last around the first half of the season. Some way through the season, there will be a pregnancy and a fire. It was confirmed that the cast headed to the Bahamas to shoot an episode on location at the Atlantis Resort and Casino.

Betty finds that everything is changing as she begins her new job as associate features editor, especially since her boss is her ex-boyfriend, Matt Hartley, who is still unhappy about their breakup. In addition, Betty's new officemate Megan, openly resents her, while Marc is constantly undermining her because he felt he was more deserving of the promotion. Meanwhile, without Betty as his assistant, Daniel is adrift, still mourning the loss of his wife, Molly. Betty tries to help Megan out on an assignment and connects with a thoughtful insect jewelry designer Olivia, while Justin starts high school and is victimized by bullies-but won't tell his mom, Hilda. Claire Meade is finding that her power struggle at the company has her sitting pretty - for the moment -- opposite Wilhemina, who lost her claim to the Meade throne last season. But Wili has perhaps an even bigger problem than job security - she is harboring a secret at home that is driving Marc to distraction. | ||||||

Betty gets to run her own Mode photo shoot at the United Nations to promote their anti-malaria initiative, "Nothing but Nets," but her big opportunity becomes a baptism by fire when Daniel's neediness takes its toll, and Matt openly demoralizes her. Meanwhile, Amanda does some soul-searching when she bonds with Daniel's new temp, Helen (Kristen Johnston), a career receptionist as fabulous as Amanda is. Wili makes it her personal mission to protect a loved one, and Hilda reaches out to Marc to figure out how to help Justin. | ||||||

Betty fires on all cylinders to get a big scoop with Gucci’s new designer, Evan York (Hamish Linklater), with the help of Hilda’s connected customer, Sammy (Adam Ferrara). But Marc plots to sabotage her, enlisting a clueless Amanda and Matt in his efforts, culminating in a showdown at the restaurant where Ignacio works. Meanwhile Daniel begins to attend a bereavement group, where he meets Natalie (Jamie-Lynn Sigler), a sexy girl who takes him out for an interesting night on the town, and Wilhelmina flies to Bermuda when she learns Connor may be there. | ||||||

Production
Production is slated to start in July 2009. Plans for a musical episode, which had been planned for the second season, only to get pushed back to the third season and then put on hold again, will now be in the fourth season. The cast will head to The Bahamas in October to shot on location there and it will air in November. Shakira has been confirmed to play her self in a cameo role , in the epsiode " The Bahama Triangle " , where Shakira helps get a Mode photoshoot back on track.
Scheduling
ABC announced that starting with the fourth season, the show will move to Friday nights starting October 16, 2009 (pushed back from the original date, October 9). Citytv will also air the fourth season to Canada at the same date and time slot as ABC.
