"'''I am not, ocntrary to the false headline, engaged in any search.'''" ( "Jimmy Wales" in a comment to the ITpro article[http://www.itpro.co.uk/strategy/20078/wikipedia-co-founder-wales-asks-info-snowden-edits])

BUT...

"'''I looked for a couple of variant spellings and found nothing, so I asked to see if others could find anything.'''" (a post by [[User:Jimbo Wales]] [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3AJimbo_Wales&diff=561499532&oldid=561499144] on his talk page, after he had been warned about the potential of violating outing in that thread)

Still, in his own opinion (On [http://interviews.slashdot.org/story/13/06/27/0213259/interview-ask-jimmy-wales-what-you-will S]lashdot), '''"My actions at Wikipedia around this were perfectly honorable and noble and did not violate any rules of any kind." '''YMMV...

Trying to silence critics and dismiss genuine questions as "trolling" seems to be a rather unsuccesful strategy. The upside is that I made the news in some rather significant media outlets! [http://www.nzz.ch/aktuell/digital/jimmy-wales-blaest-zur-jagd-auf-edward-snowden-1.18105961 Neue Zurcher Zeitung], [http://noticias.lainformacion.com/arte-cultura-y-espectaculos/internet/el-fundador-de-wikipedia-se-salta-sus-propias-normas-para-seguir-la-pista-del-fugitivo-edward-snowden_BqQ0s82Mhdjuhp6JzS0jy7/ la informacion.com], [http://www.france24.com/fr/20130626-wikipedia-edward-snowden-jimmy-wales-outing-ars-technica-forum-internet-presence-prism-scandale-nsa France 24], [http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/wikipedia-gruender-sucht-nach-edward-snowden-a-907908.html Der Spiegel], ... Jimbo reacts at [http://tech2.in.com/news/general/jimmy-wales-causes-trouble-in-wikipedia-paradise-as-he-hunts-for-snowden/897522 Tech2], but his comments there don't match reality; "I very explicitly told people not to "out" Snowden. I asked if there had been a discussion (of public information)." is ''not'' what happened; what he said was " It seems highly likely to me that he would have edited Wikipedia - most people who fit his profile (tech savvy, internet activist types) will have done so. Do we have any evidence of that, or suspicions about that?" And later,in reply to "Checking some of Snowden's aliases, I found one account that I'm curious about. Probably not him, and I guess I can't name it anyway." "If you aren't sure it would be appropriate to make it public, please do feel free to email me so that I can assess it." Worse, "'''I looked for a couple of variant spellings and found nothing, so I asked to see if others could find anything.'''" (bold by me) is a direct contadiction of "I very explicitly told people not to "out" Snowden"; in fact, he very explicitly asked people to out Snowden, either publicly or via a private email to Jimbo Wales. Note that the bolded statement came ''after'' the outing concerns had been raised. Jimbo Wales was clearly not interested in links to public discussions about Snowden and Wikipedia, he wanted people to help him find accounts used by Snowden. Why he did this is not fit for discussion here (unlike Jimbo, I prefer to discuss the contributions and ignore the contributor wherever possible), but if he wants "public discussion about it", we can end with this quote from France 24: "La couverture médiatique de l’affaire Snowden est-elle montée à la tête de Jimmy Wales?"
