The purpose of the 'DNB Poster' is to remain after the article is converted from a 'stub' using cribbed text to a sourced article. The 'DNB' tag should then change to a 'DNB Cite' tag, which still gives the reference (if it's used as a ref by the article) without the 'incorporates text' foo.

Thank you for doing this, though. There are a /lot/ of broken DNB cites, and even without the poster, TBH what you are doing is more important. Revent (talk) 20:55, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Very true, that's why I liked seeing your edits (they scrolled past on the anti-vandalism filter, fyi, since you're an IP editor. Just in case you were curious where I came from). The "DNB cite" should only stay (under references) if the DNB is actually cited by the (new) article. Otherwise just the poster is correct. Consider the 'DNB Cite' as if it was a citation of the actual print book, but redirected to an electronic facsimile edition.

TBH, part of the reason why it's 'odd' is that the proper way of doing this has changed (with the creation of templates, posters, etc.) and page edits have obviously not caught up. Revent (talk) 21:06, 22 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

It would be, and might be possible to do well, but name disambiguation is inherently hard to do with a computer, and would probably spit out even more incorrect foo that would be harder to find. It's an 'Authority Control' type of problem. (sorry if I ramble a bit, dunno how much you know about this) If you look at the Library of Congress card catalog, every person has a unique 'heading' that is the 'authorized' version of their name per LoC. When libraries around the world started making unified card catalogs, they created VIAF (www.viaf.org) which is a big computer auto-merge of the various national name authority files, and then WorldCat used VIAFs file (which already had massive amounts of duplicates due to things like variant spellings, ca. 1903- vs. 1903?-, etc) and merged it with even more catalogs. Just searching for an easy person such as a classical author like Virgil or Cicero shows how massively garbled that kind of thing can get. That's pretty much my understanding of why Wikipedia avoids it, and mostly sticks to manual page editing. The bots you see do /very/ limited things (like changing hyphens to em- or en-dashes). Actually, I'm WP:AGF and assuming you're checking these, and using your contrib history to do exactly that right now. Since I don't actually have to /check/ that they're valid links, I can cut and paste them pretty fast. :) I normally approach this kind of thing from the other direction, adding Template:Authority Control to biographies (and incidentally making the auto-searches on Worldcat work) and fixing the DNB entries as I come across them. A piece of news there now exists a fully functioning {{Appletons}} template to complement the {{Cite Appletons'}} one. Their relationship is the same as that of {{EB1911}} and {{cite EB1911}}, and other similar pairs of templates.

All EB1911 articles on Wikisource now have volume information (and many of the late volumes either display page information or have it embedded as comments in the text. So if you make similar edits in the future please include |volume=number for EB1911 citations.

Please only place under a bold Attribution line those long citations for which text has been copied. If a source does not have an dedicated attribution template the same affect can be made using {{source-attribution}}. Other references should be placed above the Attribution line. So in this case it was probably better to leave the ==Notes== section in place and put {{Cite DNB}} and {{cite Appletons'}} below ==References== and above Attribution (see here). -- PBS (talk) 17:02, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please take cause when you tag names with an Alglicized pronunciation, that you shouldn't tag the IPA of the non-English pronunciation, because that is like claiming that this is the native non-English pronunciation, when it's not. It's just an anglicized pronunciation. If necessary, you can alternatively tag those to the {{respell}}, as they are intended for Anglicized pronunciations. Please, do not forget that IPA can be used to express pronunciations of any language, not just English. Thanks. I don't want to rewrite 100,000 articles, and I certainly don't want you adding to that backlog. That something is out of copyright doesn't mean you should copy it. The refs were in fact satisfactory before, and it is generally deprecated (for which read, forbidden) to change the ref. style without extremely strong justification, not present in this case.
