With your permission, I would like to include your photo in an article I am writing for our Purple Heart Magazine and on our website www.purpleheart.org. It is the best photo I have seen of the whole mountain and I will be using it with other photos taken on "Operation Denali", a team of 6 combat wounded warrior Purple Heart recipients who reached the summit last week. You can read about this amazing feat at http://www.theveteranscoalition.org/operation_denali/

Thank you for your consideration. The photo info follows:

Hello Ram-man, a long time ago I nominated your photograph of an oxeye daisy for Featured Picture status. A rather poorly edited version of it was eventually promoted. I was never quite happy with it, as I believed that your original version was superior. Fast forward a year and I finally took my own photograph of an oxeye daisy to replace it. Thus I have nominated the edited version of your photograph to be delisted and replaced. Hope you don't mind. Kaldari (talk) 15:09, 24 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Dear Mr. Ramsey:

I am writing to ask permission to use one of your monarch butterfly life cycle images (the female laying eggs).

I am a free-lance writer with a monthly column in a FREE montly publication distributed in Fredericksburg, Virginia (and for which I receive no renumeration). My column for this coming month describes my experience several years ago seeing millions of Monarchs in flight in Canada as they were beginning their migration to Mexico, and I thought the article would be enhanced by your photograph.

Please feel free to send your response to: mvreeland45@gmail.com. My deadline to submit to my editor is 8/20/09, so a prompt response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration.

Hello, I am writing to ask your permission to use your red-tailed hawk picture in a kiosk-based presentation that may also eventually be distributed online. I discovered your photo at Wikimedia Commmons athttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Red-tailed_Hawk_Buteo_jamaicensis_Full_Body_1880px.jpg

I am a volunteer Master Naturalist in Minnesota currently working on a capstone project for the Minnesota Master Naturalist Program. My team is creating a kiosk-based touch-screen tour of birds of Fort Snelling State Park. We would like to use your image in our public education kiosk presentation with the understanding that we may need to reduce the size somewhat for inclusion in the PPT-based work.

I wonder whether the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources can have your permission to use your photo for this purpose.

Since we are up against a tight deadline (Thursday), your quick reply on this would be much appreciated.

Thank you, Lee Scholder lscholder@yahoo.com

Hi, i made an article about you. Portillo (talk) 07:52, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ram-Man,

I wanted to get your opinion on an idea I had for creating new Wikipedia article stubs based on Public Domain Books hosted by Google Books. I got the idea when reading the Wikipedia Article on Wikipedia's Growth, link included here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Modelling_Wikipedia's_growth At one point in the article it mentioned that you (Ram-Man) created an article stub for every town in the United States using Rambot in October of 2002. Here is the quote from the article.

"The sudden jump in article count in October 2002 is due to roughly 30,000 stub articles on U.S. towns and cities generated from a database being added by an auto-posting robot, Rambot, during an eight-day period. Although initially controversial as to whether these were "real" encyclopedia articles or merely "stubs", most of the Rambot articles have since been substantially expanded."

That got me thinking that other large data sets of notable and important information might also be worth automatically creating stubs for which can then later be expanded upon. With this information still fresh in my mind I was checking up on the progress of Google Books and noted that they are now hosting more than 1,000,000 public domain books as part of their Google Books project.

http://booksearch.blogspot.com/2009/08/download-over-million-public-domain.html

I think it would be an incredibly valuable resource to have a bot like Rambot create, 1,000,000 stubs for the public domain books hosted on Google Books. This is a resource of already vetted and notable material, hopefully in a standard format at Google including author name, book title, year of publication, name of publisher, summary of the book and more.

Let me know what you think of the idea and if you think its worth a go.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

OrangeCorner OrangeCorner (talk) 11:29, 28 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I am trying to model Wikipedia's growth, and that implies obtaining reliable data on human (non-bot) article creation. I would appreciate your help on that.
There are a couple of glitches in the "official" article count data between 2001 and 2003 that result in anomalous peaks in the growth rate. Two of these glitches are well-known, and are already being corrected for: (1) a bug in the counting software between 2002-08-10 and 2003-03-23, that undercounted articles by about 5–6%; and (2) about 30,700 articles created by Rambot over a 10-day period, between 2002-10-17 and 2002-10-27.
However, there seems to be a smaller but still quite large surge of new articles not long before that "Rambot week". Namely, between 2002-09-24 and 2002-10-08 (14 days) there seems to be about 2900 articles added above the normal rate.
Did Rambot create these 2900 articles too?
I see in the FAQ that Rambot has 36,973 articles in its database. Even assuming a 6% undercount by the WP software at the time, that still leaves about 1350 Rambot-maintained articles unaccounted for. Do you recall whether those 1350 articles were created by rambot at a later time, and, if so, when? Or were they created manually, before or after 2002-10?
Are you perchance aware of any other robot, besides Rambot, that has created thousands of articles in a short period?
Many thanks, and all the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 00:48, 6 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Fremont Troll Seattle 2048px.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:52, 29 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey Ram-Man,

I'd like to run another PD licensing drive, asking the top thousand contributors and all active bot owners to identify multiple licenses wherever their default license pref is less restrictive than CC-SA... and to write a bot that would maintain a licensing registry to keep track / for use by other projects. It would be interesting to see what the "PD subset" of Wikipedia looks like, and to autogenerate that every so often [the easy way would be -- the last pure-PD/[m] revision of every article. There might be ways to capture only the PD changes to an article over time, but for most articles that wouldn't be worth it. Maybe a pre-compilation assessment could identify which articles are mostly-PD and worth doing that sort of merging... perhaps a bot-assisted human merge in each case.]

I'd be interested in your thoughts. user:pharos and the New York Wikimedians have had some interesting ideas about promoting the value of the public domain, and might join in as well. SJ+ 21:57, 6 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Denisarona (talk) 10:59, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

The terms "city", "town", etc. all have specific legal meanings that differ from state to state. These meanings may have nothing to do with the population. In some cases, the terms have no meaning at all and are just whatever the census bureau decided to call them. I don't know which of these is the specific case here. -- RM 01:42, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dear Sir / Madam

My name is Erik Alm and I am a student at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, where I study landscape architecture. At the moment I am writing my master's degree project about winter gardens in Sweden.

In my project I will list about one hundred types of plants that are suitable to use in a Swedish winter garden. In addition to the Swedish and scientific names, this list will include a picture and a short description of every single type of plant.

So therefore I wonder if it would be possible for me to your picture of "Hedera helix on a brick wall" in my project.

The picture will be approximately 2x2 cm (0.8x0.8 in) in the project.

I see you commented at Wikipedia talk:2010 US Census,[5] and I know you made significant contributions to filling in articles with data from the 2000 Census. It looks like there hasn't been any further discussion in the past year. It appears that the data will start to be released in February.[6] It won't come out in one big lump, but various types of info will be released over a year or more. Any thoughts about how we should be planning for this?   Will Beback  talk  05:20, 25 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I work at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks on curriculum development for Alaska science teachers. We are currently developing online tutorials for a project on Snow & Global Climate. The tutorials are intended for teacher professional development. I'd like to use your photo for a KML file of 20 weather stations throughout AK - Homer being one of the stations. This way, our users (teachers & their students) can access weather station data from the Alaska Climate Research Center through Google Earth.

Great photo! Thanks, Snowgecko (talk) 00:38, 29 September 2010 (UTC)LenaReply

Hi,

I'm a self employed software developer. I plan to use your butterfly image as splash screen for a free (GPL3) software I'm developing for a customer. Just to let you know and thank you.

about monarchs' ability to cure their parasite infestation by herbal remedies. It's in here: http://zaozi.blogspot.com/2010/10/fera-sum-humani-nihil-me-alienum-puto.html . I always have troubles with GFDL licensing, so I hope you find it acceptable. Thanks! 150.254.101.154 (talk) 13:00, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Michał KosakowskiReply
