The T20 Black Clash (officially known as the Hot Spring Spas T20 Black Clash) is an annual Twenty20 cricket match hosted in New Zealand. The event involves two teams, Team Rugby and Team Cricket, primarily composed of past and present members of the All Blacks and Black Caps, along with other wildcard players.[1] The event has been held annually since the inaugural match in 2019.

2019

The concept of the Black Clash was first put forward by former international cricketer Stephen Fleming in 2016. Fleming approached event manager David Higgins of Duco Events to organise the event.[2] TVNZ obtained the broadcast rights for the event, and the Alternative Commentary Collective were to commentate.[3] Funds would be raised at the event for the players' respective player's associations.[4]

The event was held on January 25, 2019, at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Team Rugby's players included Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, Israel Dagg, Beauden Barrett, Jordie Barrett, Jason Spice, Ali Williams, Kendra Cocksedge, Kaylum Boshier, Ofisa Tonu'u, David Hussey and Brendon McCullum. Team Cricket's were Stephen Fleming, Grant Elliott, Luke Ronchi, Kyle Mills, Chris Harris, Nathan Astle, James Franklin, Hamish Marshall, Liz Perry, Nathan McCullum and Aaron Smith.[5]

The event was considered a success, with tickets selling out and "close to 9,000" attendants at Hagley Oval.[6] Over 1,000,000 New Zealands watched the match live on free-to-air television,[7] making it "the most viewed cricket match in New Zealand in over a decade".[8] The match was also broadcasted in Australia on Fox Sports, garnering 100,000 viewers.[8]

2020

After the success of the first event, it was announced on October 30, 2019 that Black Clash was to be renewed for two more years. 2020's match was to be held at McLean Park, Napier.[6][8]

The event was held on January 17, 2020.[9] Team Rugby's players included Richie McCaw, Israel Dagg, Jason Spice, Ofisa Tonu'u, Beauden Barrett, Jordie Barrett, Aaron Smith, Brad Weber, Carlos Spencer, and Derren Witcombe. Team Cricket's were Stephen Fleming, Daniel Vettori, Nathan Astle, Grant Elliott, Jacob Oram, Hamish Marshall, Chris Harris, Kyle Mills, Luke Ronchi, Nathan McCullum, and Matthew Sinclair. The 2020 Black Clash was the first that saw the addition of international wildcard players, with Muttiah Muralitharan and Mahela Jayawardene playing for Team Rugby, and Andy Lee playing for Team Cricket.[10][11]
