To take your first example, to me the Dobsonian would be important to astronomy if it had actually been used to discover something meaningful. In point of fact, it would rate a 'mid' based on the current schema. And yes I rate the 'Astronomy' magazine as bottom, because it is mainly recycling information from professional astronomers and others. Amateur astronomy has been important to astronomy because of the observations and discoveries they have made.
