  The bot operator's barnstar
DatBot 5 was a long ride. When many might have backed out or given up, you stuck it through, squashing bugs left and right, in order to finish the task. You might consider checking edits before they are made in future trials, but you certainly get an A+ for your persistence – an excellent trait for a bot operator :) Cheers MusikAnimal talk 21:32, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Even though I thought that I have enough skill to be a trainer myself, I was wrong. Now I come to you, begging for knowledge. So could you please be my anti-vandalism mentor? FriyMan talk 19:50, 26 January 2017 (UTC);

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Maldives at the 2016 Summer Olympics you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Kees08 -- Kees08 (talk) 03:41, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

The article Maldives at the 2016 Summer Olympics you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold  . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Maldives at the 2016 Summer Olympics for things which need to be addressed. Hello DatGuy/Archives/2017,

A HUGE backlog

We now have 822 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Problems

  • The block log sometimes showed blocks as being much longer than they were. This has now been fixed. [1]

Changes this week

  • Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before and after. [2]
  •   There are some changes to the OOjs UI. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change. [3]
  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar).

Meetings

  •   You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 7 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  •   Tidy will be replaced later this year. Instead, the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This will cause problems on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first. You can see if your wiki still has something to fix here for one of the HTML problems. This list does not cover all problems. You can read about more problems. [4][5]

Hi,

Thanks so much for uploading a smaller version of the File:Red Canna (1924) by Georgia O'Keeffe.jpg image. I don't understand the orphan tag, though.

It's being used in Red Canna (paintings) right now. Since you uploaded the smaller size, I thought we'd be good to go. I am going to add an upright parameter to the file so it appears smaller there.

Does anything else need to be done?—CaroleHenson(talk) 14:20, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

@CaroleHenson: Nothing else needs to be done regarding the size. The original size was too big, and therefore did not fall in the criteria, specifically the second rationale. It would be great if you'd have a detailed fair use rationale if you haven't already. (see the blue message for more details). Dat GuyTalkContribs 15:19, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
The {{Non-free use rationale 2}} template was completed when I uploaded the image and it was put in the summary section. Are you saying I should also copy it into the licensing section? Something else?
I have never seen that box before and I just caught the "previous version" of the remaining sentence "the previous version(s) on February 11, 2017 (seven days after February 4, 2017, when this template was added)." Sorry.—CaroleHenson(talk) 15:33, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
If it is detailed enough, then it is fine :). Dat GuyTalkContribs 15:35, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Amortias Should be the one to thank ;). Dat GuyTalkContribs 06:43, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

You changed the resolution for a file that I uploaded, and I think that another file I uploaded needs a smaller resolution. The file is File:Aaronetta Hamilton Pierce, 2015, San Antonio Express News.tiff and I see that there's a smaller resolution on that page here, but I don't know how to save that version.

Is there some sort of gadget that makes lower resolution images? Or, is there a way to save the WikiMedia low-resolution version?

Thanks so much!—CaroleHenson(talk) 23:57, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Paging Ronhjones to isle NFCC. Dat GuyTalkContribs 06:43, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
I tried selecting the low-resolution image on Wikipedia with a screen-grab kind of tool. It's kind of blurry - and it ended up being not that much smaller than the original image. I think I just got a bigger image of a blurry page. So, that didn't work.—CaroleHenson(talk) 13:27, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
@CaroleHenson: Need to use image editing tool. I reduced the original image with PhotoShop for you, to a lower resolution and the correct pixel size (<100,000 pixels). Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:04, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I'm TonyBallioni. DatGuy, thanks for creating Cherif Younousse!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. This article could be improved with additional references that would help expand its content.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

TonyBallioni (talk) 20:48, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

@TonyBallioni: For such a stub, I don't see anything that isn't verifiable. Dat GuyTalkContribs 20:50, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
The reference provided just links to the Olympic athletes main page, not the specific page of the athlete. I'm not familiar enough with the reliable sources for Olympic athletes or I would have updated myself. :) TonyBallioni (talk) 20:53, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Ah, I see. Since the Olympics are over, it has been redirected from the Rio2016 page with all the detail to the normal Olympics page, with less details. Dat GuyTalkContribs 20:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Not a problem. Sorry for the templatey message. I'm working through the back of the backlog and find the page curation tool quick to send user talk messages. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:56, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
No problem. I'm not the type to get snappy over WP:DTTR. Would an archive link work to fix it? Dat GuyTalkContribs 21:09, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
That would be fine in my opinion. Thanks for creating the page! TonyBallioni (talk) 21:37, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes

  •   EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. [6]

Problems

  • The Firefox add-on Firefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg. [7]
  • Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this. [8]

Changes this week

  • The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It will come to Meta and German Wikipedia this week. It is already available on MediaWiki.org. It will come to more wikis later. [9]
  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 February. It will be on all wikis from 16 February (calendar).

Meetings

  •   You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • Page Previews will be turned on for logged-out users on the Catalan, Greek, Russian, and Italian Wikipedias in the middle of February. Page Previews shows readers a short part of a linked article when they rest their mouse pointer on the link. This is to help them understand what it is about without leaving the article they are reading. Page Previews used to be called Hovercards. It will come to more wikis later this spring. [10]
  •   The Developer Wishlist is a list where developers prioritize tools they need. The voting closes at 14 February 23:59 (UTC). This process is only for developers.

I saw that you had an open slot for CVUA training, I would really appreciate it if you could help me. The only foreseeable barrier is that we are in pretty different time zones(No teachers in nearby time zones are available) But otherwise I would be able to accomplish anything you set out for me. Some questions: Is English your native language? Did you create an account with a specific target in mind, such as reverting vandalism? Or are you attempting to receive as many user flags? Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:23, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I saw that you are a trainer at the CVUA academy. I was hoping that you would have enough time to train me in anti-vandalism. The majority of my edits are reverting vandalism and warning users, but I wish to learn more about anti-vandalism. If you are occupied, or don't want to train me, I'm perfectly fine with that, and I apologize in advance for wasting your time. NewByzantine (talk) NewByzantine 01:16, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

@NewByzantine: Sure. Just wondering, have you ever had an account before this? Dat GuyTalkContribs 14:23, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
@DatGuy:I did create an account in August of 2015, but I think I only made 1 edit that I later reverted. I forgot the password to that account anyway, so it's inactive. Then, in 2016, I decided to join Wikipedia full time, and have used this account ever since. NewByzantine (talk) 16:41, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Are you still available? NewByzantine (talk) 18:17, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes, sorry. Some more: Is English your native language? Did you create an account with a specific target in mind, such as reverting vandalism? Or are you attempting to receive as many user flags? Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:23, 14 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes, English is my native language. I created this account with the intention of maintaining the quality of WP articles by fixing grammatical errors, reverting vandalism, etc. I'm not thinking of becoming an admin or anything like that, but it would be an advantage to get access to anti-vandalism tools like Stiki, but this is not a reason why I created an account. Hello DatGuy/Archives/2017,

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 822 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. The coordinators will do their best for for the advancement of the improvement of NPP and AfC and generally keep tracks on the development of those things. Coordinators have no additional or special user benefits, but they will be 'go to' people and will try to keep discussions in the right places. This very much involves this project too, especially with growing renewed interest around the site about what WP:ACTRIAL was all about.

This bot has ruined (multiple times) this image: [[15]]. Not only has it compressed it, but it has done so beyond recognition. WikIan -(talk) 11:39, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

It is probably a file that was renamed from an unsupported extension such as .tiff to .png, thus breaking the bot. Since it is hard for the bot to know specific details, replace {{Non-free reduce}} with {{Non-free manual reduce}}. Dat GuyTalkContribs 13:22, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Problems

  • On 22 February the wikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file. [16]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas in the visual editor. Previously this only worked in the wikitext editor. [17]
  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 March. It will be on all wikis from 2 March (calendar).

Meetings

  •   You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 28 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • You can soon upload 3D files to Commons. The file formats are AMF and STL. The plan is for this to work later this week but it could be later. [18]
  • The name "Wikipedia" will be more obvious at the top of the page when you read Wikipedia in the mobile view. This is because many readers don't realize they are on Wikipedia. [19][20]
