Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sports - Wikipedia

Article Images

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This is a contested draftification. The subject fails the notability guideline for organizations. The sources in the article have only passing mentions of the subject, if that, and no significant coverage. A quick search for more turned up no other useable sources. Reviewed during NPP. No evidence of wp:notability under SNG or GNG. The sources and material are essentially all resume/CV type factoids. Previously deleted as an AFD result at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gene Hallman. The closest possibilities for SNG are some local specialized awards which have been put into the lead. I tried my best in Swedish language sources but could not find significant, independent coverage about this sports club, only brief mentions in listings. Not enough to pass WP:GNG Ruud Buitelaar (talk) 00:54, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Very strong keep: List or not. Bolletinen has one of the strongest sports online databases in Swedish. J 1982 (talk) 07:02, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: It will be great if you can help add some references in Swedish to improve the article and prove the club's notability! Lâm (talk) 08:46, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It has already been done with the Bolletinen source. "Maratontabell för högsta damserien 1978–2003" means "all-time table for the women's top division 1978–2003". J 1982 (talk) 11:12, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment That the publisher is reliable (which I think it most likely is) is not the only criterion for notability, though. That the club appears in a table doesn't make it notable per WP:NTEAM. I do find a bit of coverage of the table tennis section, e.g. [1] and [2] – though I wonder whether those newspapers might be a bit too local to really work towards showing notability. In any case, a) the spelling "Nerikes Kils SK" is more frequent than the spelling with "ä", and b) if the article is kept, it needs a lot of work, and it ought to include more than just a brief mention of the football team in the 1970s. I don't really have an opinion at the moment about its notability. --bonadea contributions talk 14:25, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IMOCA 60 Initiative Coeur 4 (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

There is no WP:SIGCOV of this sailboat and thus it fails WP:GNG. PROD was contested. Would support redirection to IMOCA 60. Dclemens1971 (talk) 14:56, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, its common practice that every IMOCA 60 has its own page, like the french wikipedia (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Initiatives-C%C5%93ur_4). The importance is given by the Vendée Globe starting only in about two months. Give me some time to bring the article up to speed. V.Glas (talk) 19:19, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@V.Glas You created the page This page was created in November 2023 and it has had no independent, reliable, secondary sources since then. That seems like plenty of time to find them and "bring the article up to speed." (I don't believe they exist, since I searched for them WP:BEFORE nominating.) As for your argument that "it's common practice," that's an WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS argument that does not rely on any actual guidelines, and we follow English Wikipedia guidelines here. What is your policy-based reason for keeping this article? One alternative, if you believe sources will be available after the Vendee Globe, is to draftify this article, which is the appropriate place for it if you're still working on finding sources. Let me know what you think. Dclemens1971 (talk) 19:32, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, I did not create the page. That was @Yachty4000. If you are looking for sources or notability, take the French article as reference. I already translated and added some parts. V.Glas (talk) 20:13, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for my misstatement and have struck it above. Regardless there is now a week for sufficient sources to be identified. As I said, I didn’t find any that fit the bill (and I looked in French as well). But if you find some and they do meet the standards of WP:SIGCOV in WP:SIRS I will withdraw the nomination. • Comment: V.Glas has added several sources. Five of them are to the IMOCA website and thus not independent. Three ([3], [4], [5]) are WP:INTERVIEWS with the boat's skipper and thus primary sources. One ([6]) is a WP:TRIVIALMENTION in an article about several boats being built for the Vendee Globe. One ([7]) appears to be a publicity piece. Two ([8], [9]) do not mention the Initiative Coeur 4 at all. One ([10]) appears to be self-published. And finally, one ([11]) is a brief mention amid WP:ROUTINE race coverage. In short, I still don't see any SIGCOV in secondary, independent, reliable sources. (Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Fails WP:NOTDICTIONARY, with the article besides the pure definition of gamesmanship (which, in itself, is partly WP:OR) being an example farm of different sports. Beyond that, it mostly cites the book written by the person who popularized (and possibly invented) the term, a primary source that doesn't contribute to notability. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 06:10, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good question. My comment above was based on a skim of the essay, and looking back now I do think I overstated things. You're right that the essay is primarily a literary discussion of Potter's book. However in its discussion of the book's legacy and impact it does verify that the concept of gamesmanship has had an enduring life of its own. So in combination with the other sources, I'm still satisfied that this counts as WP:SIGCOV. Botterweg14 (talk) 21:30, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ESPN is one of the most credible sources of sports information in the USA. I do not agree that it's coverage should by discredited on independence grounds. Cbl62 (talk) 22:20, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cbl62: Yes I fully agree that it's one of the most credible sports journalism outlets as far as fact-checking and accuracy, and it's probably very useful for the article, but I'm just saying it may not always count towards notability due to conflicts of interest in some topics they cover. Left guide (talk) 00:25, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The ESPN article cited by Bagumba is about a now-retired coach who at the time of publication was the head coach at Tennessee Tech. To my knowledge, ESPN has never broadcast a Tennessee Tech game and had no conflict of interest in covering this particular person. So, even assuming arguendo that COI principles could be applied to a TV network, for example, promoting its game of the week, such an argument doesn't apply here. 1993 TAC Cup season (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

I am bundle-nominating all league season pages of the Talent League competition for deletion. This bundle incorporates the 25 articles listed below.

On balance, these articles fail WP:GNG. This competition does not garner the level of coverage or references about its seasons and results to justify having season-by-season articles. I include the italicised caveat because, as this is the main underage recruitment competition in Victoria, the league's players and structure do receive a decent amount of non-routine individual coverage, as a WP:BEFORE search will attest; but this coverage is all primarily focussed on the league's function as an under-aged talent pathway. The seasons themselves (i.e. who won/lost, grand finalists, etc.) receive only passing WP:ROUTINE coverage. I note also that 19 of the 25 articles (those from 2000–2018) are currently based entirely on a single database reference, and those which aren't are almost entirely from non-independent sources. I see no valid alternative to deletion and that all content worth saving is already found on the main Talent League page.

I am also nominating the following related pages because they are all part of the same bundle:

@Govvy: TRAINWRECK is a term for AfDs that cover many topics, but fail because the topics are too dissimilar – some are notable, others aren't. But surely any given TAC Cup season will be about as notable as the next? What makes you think TRAINWRECK applies here? – Teratix 02:25, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment there is a strong case for deletion on the face of it – I would be surprised if enough sources exist for individual seasons of a state-level underage development competition. • Sorry, I know from a closer's perspective it's frustrating to not have participants take a clear position, but frankly it would be very time-consuming to go through each season and exhaustively demonstrate no significant coverage exists. All I can do at this point is give my judgement as a user who has edited a fair amount in the area – based on my experience, probably the level of coverage is as Aspirex says it is. Perhaps soft delete, with no prejudice against someone who does find some coverage and wants to restart the pages? – Teratix 03:43, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article was previously deleted under a different title. (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Minnesota–Penn State football rivalry (2nd nomination)) with near-unanimous support. Article was re-created by the lone keep supporter. The fact that the article is now written with a focus on a trophy does not change the fact that it is a non-notable series or trophy. The coverage provided is inadequate. Sources generally are WP:ROUTINE coverage with a passing mention of the trophy, or basically say that it exists but do not explain any significance of the trophy. The ones with more than a passing mention explain why the trophy is not significant. Frank Anchor 15:59, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Such as coverage from The Washington Post, which said "Perhaps the spirit of the college football rivalry trophy was best captured earlier this season" by Minnesota reclaiming the Governor's Victory Bell. The New York Times featured it in their article on a rising trend in College Football in which "the trophies precede the rivalries" and "other so-called rivalries that pop up after realignment". CBS Sports used the trophy to justify inclusion of PSU-UMN in their list of 21 Big Ten rivalries. The Associated Press featured it prominently as one of the top "forced rivalries" in the Big Ten and included it as one of the "17 trophy games recognized by the conference".
Beyond its inclusion in trophy/rivalry roundup articles by top-tier national sources, the trophy also has non-routine significant coverage over 30+ years by reliable, independent regional newspapers:
None of the above sources are WP:ROUTINE; they all go in-depth on the history and significance of the trophy. They are not "routine news coverage", "planned coverage of scheduled events", or "routine events such as sports matches" but rather entire articles, sections, or columns written about the trophy itself. WP:GNG: "Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material. That the trophy columns share some space with coverage of that season's game is immaterial and expected.
I agree that you could say articles like this are routine coverage of the trophy being awarded, but the four sources above are significant coverage of the trophy that together meet GNG.
GNG requires "significant coverage" of the subject, but does not at all say that the subject must be significant. Thus the statement in the nomination that "The ones with more than a passing mention explain why the trophy is not significant." should be ignored. Reliable coverage of this trophy indicates it is significant for its non-significance.
Regardless, reliable sources do assign the trophy four components of non-routine "significance":
  • Commemorates Penn State's entrance into the Big Ten, a watershed moment for both their program and the conference.
  • Pushes Minnesota up into 4 official rivalry trophies, the most in the Big Ten, a conference famous for their rivalry trophies.
  • It being "weird" that Penn State plays for two rather unmeaningful trophies in the trophy-crazy Big Ten.
  • Frequently listed as a "forgettable" trophy, created and awarded but without much real meaning, indicative of the wider backdrop of a regional and rivalry-based sport losing those qualities to big money and conference realignment.
PK-WIKI (talk) 18:15, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The above listed sources most certainly DO NOT go into the history or significance of the trophy. The first two basically explain the trophy exists and explain that many people connected with the two universities do not know about its existance, arguing the subject trophy is not notable    . The third explains that the trophy was made to commemorate Penn State's first game in the Big Ten. That's a nice nugget of information on 1993 Penn State Nittany Lions football team, but certainly does not warrant an article on the trophy.  The last is a simple mention of the trophy's existence among many other rivalry trophys for both schools, this is absolutely a routine mention.  Further, per WP:N, The common theme in the notability guidelines is that there must be verifiable, objective evidence that the subject has received significant attention from independent sources to support a claim of notability (emphasis mine). The significant attention from independent sources, if anything, appears to refute the claim of notability of this trophy. Frank Anchor 20:21, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I cited four different reliable, independent third-party sources from 1993, 1997, and 2016. All four of the stories provide significant coverage of the trophy.
One calls it "a tradition that has withstood the test of time" and "a hallowed trophy, a symbol of what makes college football players get on the field and give it everything the've got".
All four citations DO go into the history and significance of the trophy. That it was created to mark Penn State's entrance into the Big Ten. That it tallies as Minnesota's 4th rivalry trophy, the most in the Big Ten. That newcomer Penn State's trophies are widely considered less prestigious than the rest of the Big Ten's. That trophies and rivalries are now being unnaturally created. The Governor's Victory Bell is significant because of those reasons.
That people quoted in the stories don't think it's a great trophy is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT. Their opinion has no bearing on the trophy's notability. The stories themselves written by reliable third-party sources about the trophy are the significant coverage. The trophy does not need to be considered "significant" in comparison to other trophies. Non-notable amateur sports person. In terms of WP:SPORTBASIC, the only coverage I can find is the stuff that I've added to the article. Most of which is not independent (like "listings" on personnel sheets of orgs with which the subject has a connection like these: [16][17][18]; Which, even if they were independent, are far from in-depth coverage). Or ROTM "match report" type passing mentions (like these: [19] [20]). In terms of WP:GNG, we barely have enough sources to establish even the sub-stub that we have. And certainly insufficient sources to expand any biographical information (DOB, place of birth, education, etc). A search in Irish news sources returns little to nothing. In the Irish Independent family of regional/national papers for example, all I can find are these two trivial passing mentions. Similar searches, in news sources like the Irish Examiner or Irish Times or RTE.ie, return nothing at all. Nothing. Not even trivial passing mentions. Notability is not established.
What's offered in this article's references and external links section is a collection of publications from MLB (primary non-independent source) and baseball-reference.com (a stats database), neither of which count towards notability. Furthermore, most of them don't actually discuss this list topic but are instead being used in a WP:SYNTH manner. These two sources publish some variant of the list, but lack the requisite secondary SIGCOV needed to establish notability. An extensive WP:BEFORE search wasn't of much help. I discovered this source from Baseball Almanac; it has a table of random stats (not secondary or SIGCOV), and then a "Fast Facts" section at the bottom with a brief mention of three random unrelated factoids, but no meaningful discussion about this list topic specifically. bb_catchers.tripod.com contains two sentences discussing this list, but the site has no apparent editorial or authorial information, so it's likely WP:SPS. This source contains a footnote with a single sentence (which means it falls short of SIGCOV) mentioning only the first-place entry (which means it fails NLIST). At present, this article topic fails WP:NLIST, which requires in-depth significant coverage from independent reliable secondary sources that collate and discuss this list topic's entries together as a group or set to establish notability. In light of the aforementioned article review and search for sources, delete. Left guide (talk) 22:26, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge per Reywas92's proposal at related AfDs. I think top 10 by position is too narrow (I'd favor top 20 or 25 at each position), but the precise number can be sorted out in a talk page discussion (need not be resolved here). Cbl62 (talk) 22:34, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The WP lists of career leaders for batting, pitching and baserunning categories (such as hits, wins and stolen bases) are older, generally dating to between 2004 and 2007; the lists of fielding leaders are more recent, generally from around 2019, but are no less valid. Also, the batting, pitching and baserunning lists currently include less information, and are arguably more redundant of other sources; the individual subdivisions by league which have been added to the fielding lists are useful (and factual), as are the notes on the holders of various records over the years. Anyone looking for this info could, I suppose, wade through the data on other sites to find it themselves, but why make that necessary? There used to be annual publications which included the current league records, but I'm not sure any are still being printed, so that info isn't even easy to find anymore; I can't find career single-league records on Baseball-Reference, let alone single-league leaders, so I'm not sure where they'd be available. I don't think there's a WP:SYNTH issue, because no conclusions or inferences are being drawn -it's all simply factual material. MisfitToys (talk) 02:03, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MisfitToys: None of that proves compliance with WP:NLIST, nor does it rebut the thorough source analysis set forth in the nomination, and I also see multiple arguments to avoid in deletion discussions. Can you please justify your keep !vote by providing independent secondary reliable sources that directly discuss this list topic as a group to show notability? Tagged for notability over three months ago with no sourcing improvements since then. The article's references largely consist of primary/non-independent sources and stats databases, but more importantly, they also all fail verification or only cover off-topic matters; none actually discuss this record or list. At present, this article topic fails WP:NLIST, which requires in-depth significant coverage from independent reliable secondary sources that collate and discuss this list topic's entries together as a group or set to establish notability. A thorough WP:BEFORE search yielded dismal results; the best-quality source I could find was this Guinness World record page, but the WP:RSP entry for Guinness World Records says There is consensus that world records verified by Guinness World Records should not be used to establish notability. Furthermore, it briefly mentions the first-place entry but fails to discuss a group or set of list entries together as required by WP:NLIST. Page 329 of this book offers a sentence discussing the top four entries of this list but since it's published by AuthorHouse, it's an WP:SPS. With all that said, delete. Hello, BX,
First it's too late to make this a bundled nomination. This has to happen at the beginning of an AFD discussion, not midway through. Second, a number of these articles are already being discussed in AFD discussions. They should appear as pink links. You can voice your opinions at these discussions. Liz Read! Talk! 04:29, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe I have commented at all that were nom'd. Don't have the pink thing installed tho. That's why I quasi-voted as a no-go for me. Rgrds. --BX (talk) 05:36, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, I didn't even know how many were involved. I would, if Left Guide were okay with it, withdrawing our respective noms to create one mega bundle. Conyo14 (talk) 05:47, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be the best way forward IMO. TYVM. Rgrds. --BX (talk) 06:11, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Conyo14 and BX: As Liz (an experienced regular AfD admin) says above, we're past the point of no return in withdrawing or bundling these even if we wanted to, since there are extant non-keep !votes from other community members in basically all of these. I actually plan to nominate the remaining "double plays by position" articles sometime soon, but it takes precious time to do a thorough good-faith WP:BEFORE search for each individual article to see if there's anything encyclopedically salvageable, and other commitments both on Wikipedia and in real life means the research can't always be easily done all at once. In any case, each nomination should be treated on its own merits. Left guide (talk) 09:46, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looked at the sources, and besides baseball-reference, there isn't much to justify the list as a group. If this included all double plays, then it might be more notable as a group, as Baseball Almanac covers it. Since it is only the one position, I think WP:NOTSTATS comes into play. • Keep. Dear me. Let's see.
WP:SALAT has nothing to do with this situation. Besides some housekeeping notes, it gives three annotated examples of the types of lists to avoid:
  • "list of brand names" (Way too broad, could have millions of entries)
  • "list of one-eyed horse thieves from Montana" (Of no interest to anyone)
  • "list of shades of colors of apple sauce" (Does not contribute to the state of human knowledge)
This list is not remotely like any of those, not even close.
Another editor wrote "I am not sure that double plays by right fielders is inherently notable", but then why would you want to want to be in this discussion if you don't know that? (Narrator: they are.)
WP:NLIST, c'mon. If you think that this dataset has not "been discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources" very many times, you must not read much in depth about baseball, in which case why are you trying to erase the work of editors who apparently have. It's late, and I shouldn't have to go get refs to prove the sky is blue.
And in addition to that, the nomination might be malformed. Not sure. I'll that to an admin to decide. I got here from the center fielder article and that is confusing and it took me a bit to figure out what was going on -- apparently it was made into a group nom midstream, which is not a deal-killer but tricky, and not made clear enough, all the articles in the class are supposed to right up top, and that might be important enough that we want to start over. And if so well we have a wikiproject on baseball and maybe there would be the place to start with a discussion on the general question of "should we have these types of articles generally"? We're not going to be deleting or merging the shortstops DP article (if we are, just shoot me), so why are we singling out outfielders in particular, etc etc etc. Herostratus (talk) 06:06, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do not comment on these articles here. If you agree with the proposed deletion, you don't have to do anything. If you think the article merits keeping, the remove the {{prod}} template and make an effort to improve the article so that it clearly meets the notability and verifiability criteria.

I believe the article fails notability. The article cites only a single non-independent source. A search has revealed only non-significant coverage in reference to games or the grounds and such (with the possible exception of this book page I found).
It was previously proposed for deletion in 2011, with the result being a weak keep with the expectation that user:Brocach would try to add sources. It had been more than a decade and the article has not been improved. Lenny Marks (talk) 15:45, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Minor Update: It seems @Guliolopez has been able to find some more sources. I have not been able to review yet weather they constitute significant coverage, but at a glance they seem to be either incidental or non-independent. -- Lenny Marks (talk) 21:31, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep. Personally I can't support deletion. As noted above, I found and have added a number of sources which allow for the article to be expanded beyond a stub. And, in at least some cases, appear to support a claim to notability. While some of the more in-depth sources available appear to be connected to the subject (including at least one if not both of the "anniversary/history" pieces by Weir (2009) and Duffy (1984)), others seem more independent of the subject. Including the (granted somewhat "local interest") news stories and history coverage in Armagh Today, the Ulster Gazette, and the journal of the Armagh History Group. While I'm not exactly bowled over by these sources (hence the "weak keep" recommendation), outright deletion wouldn't seem appropriate at all. As, even if there was consensus that the org wasn't sufficiently notable for a standalone title, the title could be redirected (and the related content easily merged) to The Mall, Armagh or Armagh#Sport or NCU Senior League or any number of other titles. Personally I think, on balance, that this subject can just about sustain its own title however. Certainly can't support outright deletion. Guliolopez (talk) 00:45, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your point about the ability to expand the article, I am still troubled by the other thing we both seemed to have noticed which is that the only ones that seem to constitute significant coverage are non-independent. It is my understanding of the notability policy that just because sources with information (even a lot of information) exist on a topic, it does not mean that a topic qualifies for a standalone article. Reliable sources must be independent to count towards the test and I just don't see this club as notable enough to warrant an encyclopedia article. If you want to maintain some of the article's content or expand from those sources, my feeling would be that your suggestion to merge some of the content is the best way to do it but, as it stands, I think the club simply does not satisfy notability. -- Lenny Marks (talk) 19:12, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As noted, if there is consensus that the topic doesn't warrant a standalone article then, at the very least, the content should be merged and title retained as a redirect. Perhaps to The Mall, Armagh#Club cricket. Which would be a reasonable/appropriate target. In keeping with WP:ATD-R. Guliolopez (talk) 21:02, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TNCA is the official site, doesn't count on notability. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 13:16, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am also against the deletion of these. While some of these articles might require expansion, copy editing and additional work on citations, generalised deletion is not the way to go. My reasons for the same:
  • There are standalone articles as there are similar articles for similar sporting events and it does not fail notability.
  • There is significant information in these articles. For e.g. the 2024 season page is ~15k bytes in length. I do not think these can be condensed into the original article. With eight seasons and further ones, it will make continue to make the original page unnecessarily longer and difficult to read.
  • While I do agree that some of these would require additional citations and secondary sources, generalisation as failing WP:RS is an overreach. Say the e.g. the article for the 2024 season has more than ten citations, of which a larger proportion seem to be independent secondary sources and quite a number of them are reliable.
Update: I have started working on the page for the 2024 season.

Hello. To provide some context, I plan on creating articles for Jordanian clubs that have participated in the Jordanian Second Division League, to which Deir Alla have in 2022. I set this as my limit, given that third-tier clubs and above participate in the Jordan FA Cup and there are no actively fourth-tier teams that participate in the national cup, unlike in some other countries. I don't plan on creating articles of teams that have only played in the fourth tier (i.e. the Jordanian Third Division League), as they are not notable enough to be discussed as an article.
As for the lack of "secondary sources", the vast majority of sources from that article comes from news articles that talk about the club. Zalata42 (talk) 16:43, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This article has a long history of sockpuppetry, as shown in the linked SPI and its archive. It should have been speedy deleted G5, but the latest creator account is stuck in the SPI backlog, so it's not technically eligible. Real Malabar F.C. is EC-protected, but it's been recreated under several spelling variants in draft and main space: this one was originally created as Real Malabar F.C, and moved to main space by a now blocked sock.

[47] and [48] – though I wonder whether those newspapers might be a bit too local to really work towards showing notability.

I agree, it’s part of an entire series of articles for the different Japanese football leagues which not only tracks the competitions year by year, but the teams too. Cutting out a single article in the series seems like it would break up the series for no good reason, when the information itself is super clearly presented, and threaded, in a way I haven’t been able to find anywhere else online.
In my opinion deleting it would take away something useful. For that reason, I have the page a solid edit tonight. I’ve still got to go ahead and add match report links to each individual game, but I think I at least covered the basics.
This is such a useful resource that I’m going to make it a mission to pick through all the rest of the articles in the series one by one, and expand / source each of those as well. So it would be really nice if you didn’t delete this one article as I’m doing that…

Obviously I’m not voting again, having already voted, but I’ll further explain my reasoning having spent the duration of this deletion discussion attempting to edit the article into compliance.
As the article stood when nominated (by a user who has since quit, after having several of his articles similar to this one likewise nominated for deletion / draftified, but then kept - having made “why are mine deleted when there are articles like these” type arguments), it completely lacked sources and content. The nomination was a fair cop. Since the nomination though, I’ve found and cited several sources, reworked the article in ways which I believe both clearly lay out the season, and that prove there was significant coverage in Reliable, Independent, Secondary sources, with the likelihood of there being more sources out there which I have not yet found (searching in Japanese, my second language, slows things down, but this was the first full season in a newly formed professional competition in a major developed country - the chance of there not being more sources that I just haven’t found yet is basically zero.
I would like to just remind people voting that the criteria is that sources proving notability are likely to exist, not that they are cited in the article as currently written. The appropriate policy is
- “ Notability requires only that suitable independent, reliable sources exist in the real world; it does not require their immediate presence or citation in an article. Editors evaluating notability should consider not only any sources currently named in an article, but also the possibility or existence of notability-indicating sources that are not currently named in the article. Thus, before proposing or nominating an article for deletion, or offering an opinion based on notability in a deletion discussion, editors are strongly encouraged to attempt to find sources for the subject in question and consider the possibility that sources may still exist even if their search failed to uncover any.”
I am not accusing anyone of arguing for deletion in bad faith, I think we are all trying to do what is right here, but I would like to ask anyone leaning towards deletion to ask themselves whether it is in part because they are not interested in the topic of the article, and don’t really consider foreign language sources to count when judging reliability on an English Wikipedia page.
I’m going to keep poking away at the article, searching for more sources, and editing if I have time, and honestly I think that efforts to gradually improve the article is a better way to approach this rather than deletion, but I’ll leave that up to you guys now that I’ve said my piece. • Delete: I'm failing to see the notability here. The references provided are just profiles and clearly doesn't have any SIGCOV. I'm not convinced of the established notability comment per GiantSnowman. Taking part in Olympics doesn't warranty any notability, if there aren't any sources backing it up. My search results also turned out nil and clearly no SIGCOV or GNG met. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 09:12, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After reading through BF11's comment, it's evidence some notability might be present in the North Korean sources. I'm okay with a draftify too. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 17:22, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is clearly one of the examples were requiring strict SIGCOV compliance is patently absurd. Where on earth are we supposed to go to find North Korean newspaper archives? I can only note that in a scene in the film The Game of Their Lives (regarding the 1966 North Korean team), one North Korean player showed a book full of newspaper headlines for the top players with the national team – so it is obvious that the sport was very well-covered at the time and I don't see why a few years later would have been any different. Another way to notability would be WP:ANYBIO if Kim received any of the top honors in North Korea, which would be either Merited Athlete or People's Athlete. Looking up his name (김정민) in relation to the title Merited Athlete (공훈체육인) I get results including a piece from the Minju Choson stating in the preview "화원1동에 입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소의 김정민,량은향 로동자부부 ... 공훈체육인칭호가 수여되였다. 로력훈장이 1명에게,국기훈장 제2급이 18명 . [Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang, workers of the Mangyongdae District Waterworks Management Office in Hwawon 1-dong, were awarded the title of Meritorious Sportsman.]" – I have a strong feeling this was him (esp. given that we have no other North Korean 'Kim Jong-min's) but I receive warning messages when entering the site so I can't look further. Searching his name in relation to the 'Mangyondae District Waterworks Management Office' ("입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소" "김정민") brings up another piece from the Rodong Sinmun further discussing 'Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang' ("화원1동에 입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소의 김정민, 량은향 로동자부부는 현대적인 살림집을 받아안고보니 우리 원수님의 은덕이 너무도 크고 ... [Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang, workers of the Mangyongdae District Waterworks Management Office in Hwawon 1-dong, received a modern house and realized that the grace of our Marshal was so great...]") but likewise I cannot access it further. IMO I'd like to keep this given how accomplished he is and how ridiculous it is to find North Korean newspaper sources. BeanieFan11 (talk) 14:55, 24 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Draftify: I agree with BeanieFan11's argument - proving WP:GNG for a North Korean would be extremely difficult. At the same time, the article gives very little information about the subject and needs improving.

Cannot find any WP:SIGCOV in independent, reliable sources -- all I'm finding is coverage on the European Handball Federation site, which is not independent. Open to withdrawing this nomination if anyone can turn up qualifying SIGCOV to meet WP:GNG/WP:NSPORT -- perhaps I missed coverage in Azeri. Dclemens1971 (talk) 16:36, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fails notability, not a famous person. never did anything special. for example the article says he won a silver in speed skating!? a silver in what competition ? the rest of his achievements look a bit fake or exaggerated. it feels like he just paid someone to create an article here for him. Fails notability, almost everything in this article is not correct. he probably won some medals in some random tournaments but he never even participated in World or Asian Championships, let alone winning medals. this is more like a fake article trying to promote someone with no major achievement. This is a contested draftification. The subject fails the notability guideline for organizations. The sources in the article have only passing mentions of the subject, if that, and no significant coverage. A quick search for more turned up no other useable sources. • Delete He did not compete at the 2018 Asian Games, so that claim is false. The WKF database shows he is a registered competitor, but they show no record of him competing at any of their events. There are over 350 ranked competitors in his division, but he is not listed. The sources don't show WP notability or, in the case of his supposed Asian Games championship, what they're claimed to show. There is a source showing he won a bronze medal at the "2nd World Goju Karate Championship" in 2013 (he'd have been 17 or 18). The host South Africans won 21 of the 55 gold medals. His age, the medal distribution, and the fact that many of the divisions didn't even have enough competitors to give out all 4 medals all seem to point to this being a relatively minor event. I don't believe the coverage meets WP:GNG as it consists of lots of congratulatory reporting on results and celebrations over success at minor events. No evidence that any WP notability criteria is met. Papaursa (talk) 16:00, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:TOOSOON for an article at the moment. This article should wait until there is some actual WP:SIGCOV of the subject, who is still a child athlete. JTtheOG (talk) 19:28, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would also support draftification per the nomination until Tran gets more coverage. SirMemeGod21:54, 19 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Don't Delete: I think its important to note that John-Paul Tran was recently featured on the front page of Nguoi-Viet news. The article (which is only available in Vietnamese) can be found here. Summary of New Zealand national rugby league team test matches (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Article relys on a single source, article is strangely formatted and isn't consistent with other similar articles, case for WP:TNT so a proper List of New Zealand national rugby league team results can be created.

Previously PRODed, and was reverted on the basis that the article could be improved and that I as PRODed nominator had changed the name of the page. Yes, article could be improved, but there is virtually nothing novel or useful on this page so don't see why edit history needs retaining for a new article "List of New Zealand national rugby league team results". Articles name was changed to better reflect the article content. But in reality, it is so far away from the standard way to display a list of national team results that it's best to be deleted. To fix this page would involve removing 99% of the content anyway. Mn1548 (talk) 08:04, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
