Adding a new AfD discussion

Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:

Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.

What's offered in this article's references and external links section is a collection of publications from MLB (primary non-independent source) and baseball-reference.com (a stats database), neither of which count towards notability. Furthermore, most of them don't actually discuss this list topic but are instead being used in a WP:SYNTH manner. These two sources publish some variant of the list, but lack the requisite secondary SIGCOV needed to establish notability. An extensive WP:BEFORE search wasn't of much help. I discovered this source from Baseball Almanac; it has a table of random stats (not secondary or SIGCOV), and then a "Fast Facts" section at the bottom with a brief mention of three random unrelated factoids, but no meaningful discussion about this list topic specifically. bb_catchers.tripod.com contains two sentences discussing this list, but the site has no apparent editorial or authorial information, so it's likely WP:SPS. This source contains a footnote with a single sentence (which means it falls short of SIGCOV) mentioning only the first-place entry (which means it fails NLIST). At present, this article topic fails WP:NLIST, which requires in-depth significant coverage from independent reliable secondary sources that collate and discuss this list topic's entries together as a group or set to establish notability. Keep. The WP lists of career leaders for batting, pitching and baserunning categories (such as hits, wins and stolen bases) are older, generally dating to between 2004 and 2007; the lists of fielding leaders are more recent, generally from around 2019, but are no less valid. Also, the batting, pitching and baserunning lists currently include less information, and are arguably more redundant of other sources; the individual subdivisions by league which have been added to the fielding lists are useful (and factual), as are the notes on the holders of various records over the years. Anyone looking for this info could, I suppose, wade through the data on other sites to find it themselves, but why make that necessary? There used to be annual publications which included the current league records, but I'm not sure any are still being printed, so that info isn't even easy to find anymore; I can't find career single-league records on Baseball-Reference, let alone single-league leaders, so I'm not sure where they'd be available. I don't think there's a WP:SYNTH issue, because no conclusions or inferences are being drawn -it's all simply factual material. MisfitToys (talk) 02:03, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MisfitToys: None of that proves compliance with WP:NLIST, nor does it rebut the thorough source analysis set forth in the nomination, and I also see multiple arguments to avoid in deletion discussions. Can you please justify your keep !vote by providing independent secondary reliable sources that directly discuss this list topic as a group to show notability? If all of these were nominated for deletion or merger into a new List of Major League Baseball career double plays leaders article, I would support that. As Liz (an experienced regular AfD admin) says in one of those AfDs, we're past the point of no return in withdrawing or bundling these even if we wanted to, since there are extant non-keep !votes from other community members in basically all of these. I actually plan to nominate the remaining "double plays by position" articles sometime soon, but it takes precious time to do a thorough good-faith WP:BEFORE search for each individual article to see if there's anything encyclopedically salvageable, and other commitments both on Wikipedia and in real life means the research can't always be easily done all at once. Tagged for notability over three months ago with no sourcing improvements since then. The article's references largely consist of primary/non-independent sources and stats databases, but more importantly, they also all fail verification or only cover off-topic matters; none actually discuss this record or list. At present, this article topic fails WP:NLIST, which requires in-depth significant coverage from independent reliable secondary sources that collate and discuss this list topic's entries together as a group or set to establish notability. A thorough WP:BEFORE search yielded dismal results; the best-quality source I could find was this Guinness World record page, but the WP:RSP entry for Guinness World Records says There is consensus that world records verified by Guinness World Records should not be used to establish notability. Furthermore, it briefly mentions the first-place entry but fails to discuss a group or set of list entries together as required by WP:NLIST. Page 329 of this book offers a sentence discussing the top four entries of this list but since it's published by AuthorHouse, it's an WP:SPS. With all that said, delete. Merge all in set Why do all these lists need to have the top 100 players? I think a List of Major League Baseball career double plays leaders that had just the top 10 at each position may be reasonable and notable. I'm not advocating for a !keep. Just merely pointing out the references that are to be pointed here. Baseball Almanac is considered reliable and covers the statistical aspect. @Conyo14: Well can you please provide more specific usable links (the Baseball Almanac link you supplied comes up as an error without rendering anything meaningful) or quotes of the source material so they can be judged and examined by the community? I'm afraid your argument is WP:THEREMUSTBESOURCES as of the present moment. Notability is demonstrated via evidence of sufficient source material, not the belief or assertion of such. WP:Articles for deletion/List of NBA career ejections leaders is a current example of evidence-based WP:NLIST notability being demonstrated in a similar context (sports stats list). @Conyo14: Is this the Baseball Almanac source you've been alluding to? If so, it unfortunately doesn't contribute towards WP:NLIST for this particular topic. It has a table with a collection of random outfielder double play stats (not secondary or SIGCOV), and then a "Fast Facts" section at the bottom with secondary prose about three random factoids, but nothing about this list topic specifically. Comment: Forgot to mention in the nom that the content within the article's two sources don't discuss this list topic at all. They're being used in WP:OR/WP:SYNTH fashion to verify tangential details. And this in the external links section is not secondary or SIGCOV; raw stats tables don't count towards notability. First it's too late to make this a bundled nomination. This has to happen at the beginning of an AFD discussion, not midway through. Second, a number of these articles are already being discussed in AFD discussions. They should appear as pink links. You can voice your opinions at these discussions. Liz ^{Read! Looked at the sources, and besides baseball-reference, there isn't much to justify the list as a group. If this included all double plays, then it might be more notable as a group, as Baseball Almanac covers it. Since it is only the one position, I think WP:NOTSTATS comes into play. Procedural Keep - To repeat my comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Major League Baseball career double plays as a center fielder leaders: There are too many other DP articles. If anything all three OF (LF/RF/CF) DP lists should be merged/redirected to List of Major League Baseball career double plays as an outfielder leaders. I don't see why RF is targeted over CF or LF.   - The result was no consensus‎. NLIST states, "There is no present consensus for how to assess the notability of more complex and cross-categorization lists (such as "Lists of X of Y") or what other criteria may justify the notability of stand-alone lists..." This AfD reflects the present lack of consensus on this wider issue.

Merge or at least partially merge to the outfield double play article. I am not sure that double plays by right fielders is inherently notable, but double plays by specific position is relevant to the general outfield article. Keep. Dear me. Let's see.

WP:SALAT has nothing to do with this situation. Besides some housekeeping notes, it gives three annotated examples of the types of lists to avoid:

"list of brand names" (Way too broad, could have millions of entries)
"list of one-eyed horse thieves from Montana" (Of no interest to anyone)
"list of shades of colors of apple sauce" (Does not contribute to the state of human knowledge)

This list is not remotely like any of those, not even close.

Another editor wrote "I am not sure that double plays by right fielders is inherently notable", but then why would you want to want to be in this discussion if you don't know that? (Narrator: they are.)

WP:NLIST, c'mon. If you think that this dataset has not "been discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources" very many times, you must not read much in depth about baseball, in which case why are you trying to erase the work of editors who apparently have. It's late, and I shouldn't have to go get refs to prove the sky is blue.

And in addition to that, the nomination might be malformed. Not sure. I'll that to an admin to decide. I got here from the center fielder article and that is confusing and it took me a bit to figure out what was going on -- apparently it was made into a group nom midstream, which is not a deal-killer but tricky, and not made clear enough, all the articles in the class are supposed to right up top, and that might be important enough that we want to start over. And if so well we have a wikiproject on baseball and maybe there would be the place to start with a discussion on the general question of "should we have these types of articles generally"? We're not going to be deleting or merging the shortstops DP article (if we are, just shoot me), so why are we singling out outfielders in particular, etc etc etc. Herostratus (talk) 06:06, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do not comment on these articles here. If you agree with the proposed deletion, you don't have to do anything. If you think the article merits keeping, the remove the {{prod}} template and make an effort to improve the article so that it clearly meets the notability and verifiability criteria.

Redirect all to 2023 Palarong Pambansa. The games themselves seem to be getting quite a bit of coverage in the Philippines media[25][26][27][28][29][30] but I'm not convinced the individual events pass the notability guidelines. I believe the article fails notability. The article cites only a single non-independent source. A search has revealed only non-significant coverage in reference to games or the grounds and such (with the possible exception of this book page I found).

Weak keep. Personally I can't support deletion. As noted above, I found and have added a number of sources which allow for the article to be expanded beyond a stub. And, in at least some cases, appear to support a claim to notability. While some of the more in-depth sources available appear to be connected to the subject (including at least one if not both of the "anniversary/history" pieces by Weir (2009) and Duffy (1984)), others seem more independent of the subject. Including the (granted somewhat "local interest") news stories and history coverage in Armagh Today, the Ulster Gazette, and the journal of the Armagh History Group. While I'm not exactly bowled over by these sources (hence the "weak keep" recommendation), outright deletion wouldn't seem appropriate at all. As, even if there was consensus that the org wasn't sufficiently notable for a standalone title, the title could be redirected (and the related content easily merged) to The Mall, Armagh or Armagh#Sport or NCU Senior League or any number of other titles. I appreciate your point about the ability to expand the article, I am still troubled by the other thing we both seemed to have noticed which is that the only ones that seem to constitute significant coverage are non-independent. It is my understanding of the notability policy that just because sources with information (even a lot of information) exist on a topic, it does not mean that a topic qualifies for a standalone article. Reliable sources must be independent to count towards the test and I just don't see this club as notable enough to warrant an encyclopedia article. If you want to maintain some of the article's content or expand from those sources, my feeling would be that your suggestion to merge some of the content is the best way to do it but, as it stands, I think the club simply does not satisfy notability. -- Lenny Marks (talk) 19:12, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am also against the deletion of these. While some of these articles might require expansion, copy editing and additional work on citations, generalised deletion is not the way to go. My reasons for the same:

There are standalone articles as there are similar articles for similar sporting events and it does not fail notability.
There is significant information in these articles. For e.g. the 2024 season page is ~15k bytes in length. I do not think these can be condensed into the original article. With eight seasons and further ones, it will make continue to make the original page unnecessarily longer and difficult to read.
While I do agree that some of these would require additional citations and secondary sources, generalisation as failing WP:RS is an overreach. Say the e.g. the article for the 2024 season has more than ten citations, of which a larger proportion seem to be independent secondary sources and quite a number of them are reliable.

Update: I have started working on the page for the 2024 season.

Considering the minor accomplishments, this good source is not enough to push him over the WP:GNG bar. A further source search only yielded stat sites, social media and namesakes. Hello. To provide some context, I plan on creating articles for Jordanian clubs that have participated in the Jordanian Second Division League, to which Deir Alla have in 2022. I set this as my limit, given that third-tier clubs and above participate in the Jordan FA Cup and there are no actively fourth-tier teams that participate in the national cup, unlike in some other countries. I don't plan on creating articles of teams that have only played in the fourth tier (i.e. the Jordanian Third Division League), as they are not notable enough to be discussed as an article.

Tried searching for SIGCOV in reliable sources in English and Malayalam (റിയൽ മലബാർ എഫ്.സി.), and the best I could come up with was routine coverage in Mathrubhumi [31], [32], and passing mentions in Madhyamam [33], The Hindu [34], the Times of India [35] and Kerala Kaumudi [36],[37], nothing substantial enough for WP:GNG.

This article has a long history of sockpuppetry, as shown in the linked SPI and its archive. It should have been speedy deleted G5, but the latest creator account is stuck in the SPI backlog, so it's not technically eligible. Real Malabar F.C. is EC-protected, but it's been recreated under several spelling variants in draft and main space: this one was originally created as Real Malabar F.C, and moved to main space by a now blocked sock. Comment Leaving out the fact that the creator of this article had several indiscriminate creations, this player does have a established career and seems notable. He had played in the top tier of Irish football (a fully professinal league) since 2017 with a total of more than 150 games. Furthermore, the player had also appeared and scored in UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers. I think there should be references to make it passes WP:GNG.

The article of this young Slovak men's footballer has been tagged for notability issues since April 2022. He played a total of 378 minutes in the Slovakia's highest league to date. In terms of reliable secondary sources, I only found passing mentions from squad list, such as Ref 1 and Ref 2). I do not believe that the subject of this article satisfies notability guidelines. A cursory search did not turn up reliable independent sources that could be used to improve it. Even looking beyond that, the article in its current state appears to be entirely deserted, consisting mainly of empty tables. Delete Enough with these head to head articles, too many of them. There is certainly coverage, but how we use sources and what we do with the content is one thing. Comment That the publisher is reliable (which I think it most likely is) is not the only criterion for notability, though. That the club appears in a table doesn't make it notable per WP:NTEAM. I do find a bit of coverage of the table tennis section, e.g. [47] and [48] – though I wonder whether those newspapers might be a bit too local to really work towards showing notability. In any case, a) the spelling "Nerikes Kils SK" is more frequent than the spelling with "ä", and b) if the article is kept, it needs a lot of work, and it ought to include more than just a brief mention of the football team in the 1970s. I saw the film The Game of Their Lives and it has sigcov on him. I kept a notebook with the content discussing him that I'll have to find. I believe one scene had a player saying something like 'here's [North Korean] newspaper headlines I kept on all of our players' – so it's clear that the players (especially the significant ones like Yang) had sigcov. Comment The article shouldn't have been Prod'ed in the first place, because there are multiple citations in play, all-be-it mostly primary, makes it not an article you can PROD. There are some secondary sources on there, but many people call them routine coverage. @EnglishDude98: I suggest you read through WP:V and try and find those sources which users today would call WP:SIGCOV. I agree, it’s part of an entire series of articles for the different Japanese football leagues which not only tracks the competitions year by year, but the teams too. Cutting out a single article in the series seems like it would break up the series for no good reason, when the information itself is super clearly presented, and threaded, in a way I haven’t been able to find anywhere else online.

In my opinion deleting it would take away something useful. For that reason, I have the page a solid edit tonight. I’ve still got to go ahead and add match report links to each individual game, but I think I at least covered the basics.

This is such a useful resource that I’m going to make it a mission to pick through all the rest of the articles in the series one by one, and expand / source each of those as well. So it would be really nice if you didn’t delete this one article as I’m doing that…

Obviously I’m not voting again, having already voted, but I’ll further explain my reasoning having spent the duration of this deletion discussion attempting to edit the article into compliance.

As the article stood when nominated (by a user who has since quit, after having several of his articles similar to this one likewise nominated for deletion / draftified, but then kept - having made “why are mine deleted when there are articles like these” type arguments), it completely lacked sources and content. The nomination was a fair cop. Since the nomination though, I’ve found and cited several sources, reworked the article in ways which I believe both clearly lay out the season, and that prove there was significant coverage in Reliable, Independent, Secondary sources, with the likelihood of there being more sources out there which I have not yet found (searching in Japanese, my second language, slows things down, but this was the first full season in a newly formed professional competition in a major developed country - the chance of there not being more sources that I just haven’t found yet is basically zero.

I would like to just remind people voting that the criteria is that sources proving notability are likely to exist, not that they are cited in the article as currently written. The appropriate policy is

- “ Notability requires only that suitable independent, reliable sources exist in the real world; it does not require their immediate presence or citation in an article. Editors evaluating notability should consider not only any sources currently named in an article, but also the possibility or existence of notability-indicating sources that are not currently named in the article. Thus, before proposing or nominating an article for deletion, or offering an opinion based on notability in a deletion discussion, editors are strongly encouraged to attempt to find sources for the subject in question and consider the possibility that sources may still exist even if their search failed to uncover any.”

I am not accusing anyone of arguing for deletion in bad faith, I think we are all trying to do what is right here, but I would like to ask anyone leaning towards deletion to ask themselves whether it is in part because they are not interested in the topic of the article, and don’t really consider foreign language sources to count when judging reliability on an English Wikipedia page.

I’m going to keep poking away at the article, searching for more sources, and editing if I have time, and honestly I think that efforts to gradually improve the article is a better way to approach this rather than deletion, but I’ll leave that up to you guys now that I’ve said my piece. Weak keep. The article has been improved, although I only see one independent/secondary source (correct me if I'm wrong). I don't really have a P&G-based view on this, but in general an article on a season of a sports team that's more than a stub and meets WP:V generally satisfies the criteria for a WP:SPLIT and has a valid navigational/informational purpose, even if there isn't WP:SIGCOV of the season itself. Just re sources, some of them are press releases from the league, but apart from the one you mentioned, we have a report on the need for the stadium development / licensing requirements from an independent community development organisation, a historical overview of the stadium redevelopment from the government of another prefecture who is looking to build stadiums there, an article in an online soccer magazine explaining the promotion / relegation games system (it was the inaugural season, so the system was new) giving dates and teams for the matches, and finally an overview of the full season, and of individual matches (one so far, but I’ll add them all eventually if this article is kept) by an independent sports data collection and visualisation company which doesn’t just get the data from the official sources, but also watches the games to collect their own extra data, which it then synthesises into proprietary secondary statistic (Chance Building Points being the main one), and visual game timelines. This is clearly one of the examples were requiring strict SIGCOV compliance is patently absurd. Where on earth are we supposed to go to find North Korean newspaper archives? I can only note that in a scene in the film The Game of Their Lives (regarding the 1966 North Korean team), one North Korean player showed a book full of newspaper headlines for the top players with the national team – so it is obvious that the sport was very well-covered at the time and I don't see why a few years later would have been any different. Another way to notability would be WP:ANYBIO if Kim received any of the top honors in North Korea, which would be either Merited Athlete or People's Athlete. Looking up his name (김정민) in relation to the title Merited Athlete (공훈체육인) I get results including a piece from the Minju Choson stating in the preview "화원1동에 입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소의 김정민，량은향 로동자부부 ... 공훈체육인칭호가 수여되였다． 로력훈장이 1명에게，국기훈장 제2급이 18명 . [Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang, workers of the Mangyongdae District Waterworks Management Office in Hwawon 1-dong, were awarded the title of Meritorious Sportsman.]" – I have a strong feeling this was him (esp. given that we have no other North Korean 'Kim Jong-min's) but I receive warning messages when entering the site so I can't look further. Searching his name in relation to the 'Mangyondae District Waterworks Management Office' ("입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소" "김정민") brings up another piece from the Rodong Sinmun further discussing 'Kim Jong-min and Ryang-hyang' ("화원1동에 입사한 만경대구역상하수도관리소의 김정민, 량은향 로동자부부는 현대적인 살림집을 받아안고보니 우리 원수님의 은덕이 너무도 크고 ... Sorry, I know from a closer's perspective it's frustrating to not have participants take a clear position, but frankly it would be very time-consuming to go through each season and exhaustively demonstrate no significant coverage exists. All I can do at this point is give my judgement as a user who has edited a fair amount in the area – based on my experience, probably the level of coverage is as Aspirex says it is. Delete Still another junior karateka with no success as an adult. The silver medal it shows for him at the Asian championships was in a cadet division (clear because the weight division given isn't used for adults and because he was only 15). The WKF database shows he won two fights to win the silver. He has never competed in a European or world championship as an adult. In fact, the WKF doesn't show him competing in any event as an adult yet. The sources are all from state media reporting on team results. No WP notability criteria are met. Delete All of his successes were as a pre-teen or teenager, which doesn't show WP notability. He never competed at any European or world championships, either in a youth or adult division. As an adult he never finished in the top 10 of any WKF sanctioned tournament and lost more fights than he won. The sources merely report results and mistakenly refer to the Karate 1 series of events as "world championships" instead of relatively minor events. Delete He did not compete at the 2018 Asian Games, so that claim is false. The WKF database shows he is a registered competitor, but they show no record of him competing at any of their events. There are over 350 ranked competitors in his division, but he is not listed. The sources don't show WP notability or, in the case of his supposed Asian Games championship, what they're claimed to show. There is a source showing he won a bronze medal at the "2nd World Goju Karate Championship" in 2013 (he'd have been 17 or 18). The host South Africans won 21 of the 55 gold medals. His age, the medal distribution, and the fact that many of the divisions didn't even have enough competitors to give out all 4 medals all seem to point to this being a relatively minor event. I don't believe the coverage meets WP:GNG as it consists of lots of congratulatory reporting on results and celebrations over success at minor events. Don't Delete: I think its important to note that John-Paul Tran was recently featured on the front page of Nguoi-Viet news. The article (which is only available in Vietnamese) can be found here. Article relys on a single source, article is strangely formatted and isn't consistent with other similar articles, case for WP:TNT so a proper List of New Zealand national rugby league team results can be created.

Previously PRODed, and was reverted on the basis that the article could be improved and that I as PRODed nominator had changed the name of the page. Yes, article could be improved, but there is virtually nothing novel or useful on this page so don't see why edit history needs retaining for a new article "List of New Zealand national rugby league team results". Articles name was changed to better reflect the article content. But in reality, it is so far away from the standard way to display a list of national team results that it's best to be deleted.
