Russian
Etymology
Blend of либера́л (liberál, “liberal”) + педера́ст (pederást, pedɛrást, “pederast”). Used when expressing aversion to neoliberalism and/or homosexuality.
Pronunciation
Noun
либера́ст • (liberást) m anim (genitive либера́ста, nominative plural либера́сты, genitive plural либера́стов, feminine либера́стка)
Usage notes
The term is often used by political bloggers and other politically active citizens in Russia and other post-Soviet countries with strong anti-western sentiment as a pejorative against supporters of western liberal democracy, free-market capitalism, and social liberalism. It is a contraction of the word "liberal" and "pederast", as among right-wing Russians pederasty is considered virtually synonymous with homosexuality, the latter of which liberals generally defend.
