Inherited from Old Church Slavonic пладьне (pladĭne), from Proto-Slavic *poldьne (< earlier *polъdьne) - a case form of *polъ (“half”) + *dьnь (“day”). Cognate with Macedonian пладне (pladne) and Czech poledne, among others.
