Stressed [ʲe] regularly developed into [ʲɵ] before hard consonants. The letter ё (jo) was later created to reflect this, the diaresis probably being inspired by the German diaeresis being used for umlaut, but is often ignored in print. Its first appearance in typography was in 1797.
