In Hong Kong and Macau Cantonese, when describing the action of "going to mainland China", the verb 返 (faan¹, “to return (to)”) is usually used instead of 去 (heoi³, “to go (to)”) even if the speaker was born in Hong Kong or Macau.

People living in Hainan may refer to whole China except the island and Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as Mainland China. But for people living in the latter three regions, the concept of “Mainland China” includes Hainan island.
