Uncertain and problematic. Has been traditionally considered a cognate of Ancient Greek ฮฑแฝฮดฮฎ (audแธ—, โ€œvoice, speechโ€) and Sanskrit เคตเคฆเคคเคฟ (vรกdati, โ€œto say, speakโ€) from presumed Proto-Indo-European *hโ‚‚wodhโ‚‚- (โ€œto speakโ€).[1]

Kloekhorst derives it instead from Proto-Indo-European *wethโ‚‚- (โ€œto sayโ€), making it a cognate of Latin vetล (โ€œto advise not toโ€) and Welsh dweud (โ€œto sayโ€).[2]

The word shows preservation of the original PIE heteroclitic inflection with secondary hysterodynamic accentuation of an originally proterodynamic word (similar to Hittite ๐’‚Š๐’Œ๐’„ฏ (e-eลก-แธซar /โ ฤ“ลกแธซarโ /, โ€œbloodโ€) and Hittite ๐’๐’‹ป (pรกt-tar /โ pattarโ /, โ€œwingโ€)).
