From Old Norse -skapr, from Proto-Germanic *-skapiz. Cognate with English -scape and -ship. When Norwegian borrowed words from Dutch, Middle Low German, or Middle High German or German containing the suffixes -schap or -schaft, it used this suffix to loan-translate those as well.
