1. A Baltic Sea island just north of the Swedish island of Gotland.

From either Gutnish or Old Swedish Farøø, Faroyna, probably from a compound of a word related to English fare + a word related to Swedish ö (“island”). The folk etymology connecting it with får (“sheep”) is spurious.
