taxus m (plural taxussen, diminutive taxusje n)

A loanword of Scythian origin, from Proto-Iranian *taxša, from Proto-Indo-European *tekʷ- (to flee, run), as the fruit was considered poisonous. Also compare modern Persian تخش (taxš, crossbow).[1]
