ഇന്തോ-യൂറോപ്പ്യൻഗോത്രത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു റോമാനിക് ഭാഷയാണ്‌ പോർച്ചുഗീസ് ഭാഷ പോർച്ചുഗലിൽ 1 കോടിയോളം ആൾക്കാരും ലോകമെമ്പാടുമായി 270,000,000[4] ആൾക്കാരും ഈ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നതായി കണാക്കക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ദക്ഷിണാർദ്ധഗോളത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും വ്യാപകമായി സംസാരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതും പശ്ചിമാർദ്ധഗോളത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും വ്യാപകമായി സംസാരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന മൂന്നാമത്തെ ഭാഷയുമായ പോർച്ചുഗീസ് മാതൃഭാഷയായി സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണത്തിൽ ലോകത്തിൽ ഏഴാം സ്ഥാനത്താണ് [5] . 15-ഉം 16-ഉം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിൽ പോർച്ചുഗീസ് സാമ്രാജ്യം കോളനികൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ചതോടെയാണ് ഈ ഭാഷ ലോകവ്യാപകമായത്. തെക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ബ്രസീൽ, ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഗോവ, ചൈനയിലെ മകൗ, തെക്കു -കിഴക്കേ ഏഷ്യയിലെ ടിമോർ, ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ കേപ്പ് വേർഡ്, ഗിനി-ബിസൗ, സാവോ ടോം ആൻഡ് പ്രിൻസിപ്പെ, അംഗോള, മൊസാംബിക്ക് , ഇക്വറ്റോറിയൽ ഗിനി എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ പോർച്ചുഗീസ് കോളനികൾ ആയിരുന്നു. ശ്രീലങ്കയിൽ 350 വർഷത്തോളം ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഒരു സംസാരഭാഷയുമായിരുന്നു പോർച്ചുഗീസ് ഭാഷ. പോർച്ചുഗീസിന്റെ സ്വനിമസഞ്ചയം(Phonology) സ്പാനിഷ്, ഇറ്റാലിയൻ എന്നീ ഭാഷകളേക്കാളും കറ്റാലൻ, ഫ്രഞ്ച് എന്നീ ഭാഷകളോട് സാദൃശ്യം പുലർത്തുന്നു. പക്ഷേ വ്യാകരണ നിയമങ്ങൾക്ക് സ്പാനിഷ് ഭാഷയുമായി വളരേയേറെ സാമ്യമുണ്ട്.
