==Etymology==

Medieval Armenian sources attest to a settlement in the locale called ''Mayraberd'' ({{Lang-hy|Մայրաբերդ|lit=mother fortress}}). The modern name ''Askeran'' ({{Lang-hy|Ասկերան|lit=military encampment}}) refers to the settlement's historic use from the beginning of the 18th-century as an arsenal for various military powers.{{sfn|Mkrtchyan|1988|pp= 161-162}}
