The painting depicts the view of a mirror-like lake at sunset in [[Finland]]. In the foreground are some young pines and a half-uprooted stump. In the middle is a bay with wooded islets. To the left, a ridge runs diagonally across the picture.<ref name=":1" />

Albert Edelfelt painted the picture from June to July 1889 in [[Tammela, Finland|Tammela]], [[Tavastia (historical province)|Tavastia]], at [[Saaris{{Ill|Saari's manor|Saarislt=Saari's estate]]|fi|Saaren kartano (Tammela)|sv|Saaris gård}} - owned by the family of his wife, {{ILL|Ellan de la Chapelle|sv|Ellan de la Chapelle}}. The view is from {{ILL|Kaukolanharju|fi|Kaukolanharju}} ridge, North West of the straight between {{ILL|Pyhäjärvi, Tammela|lt=Pyhäjärvi|fi|Pyhäjärvi (Tammela)}} and {{ILL|Kuivajärvi, Tammela|lt=Kuivajärvi|fi|Kuivajärvi (Tammela)}}.<ref name=":1" />
