  The Tireless Contributor Barnstar
Thank you for getting the article German Mission House to GA status! I enjoy reading new GA and FA articles when they get promoted, and recently saw your featured List of historic places in the Chatham Islands. I thought it was interesting that only one of the places had its own Wikipedia article, and that more attention should probably be given to it then. I'm glad today it got that attention, and that there are people like you to get these niche but interesting places promoted! A huge thanks, from North Carolina 😄 Johnson524 01:15, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for an interesting article! - Today's story is about a tune used by Bach and Mozart. - (forgot to sign)

The story is today about the first published composition by Arnold Schönberg which I was blessed to hear. Listen, and you probably read what Alma Mahler (to-be-Mahler at the time, to be precise, who was present at the first performance) said, and yes that was too much for the Main page ;) - I wonder if with a bit more time we might have arrived at a hook doing a bit more justice to a quite unique piece, but I was busy travelling and today's appearance caught me as a surprise. - Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:18, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

3 July is the birthday of Leoš Janáček, and I'm happy I had a meaningful DYK in 2021. It's also the birthday of Franz Kafka, and I uploaded pics from his family's album seen in Berlin. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:31, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Libuše Domanínská, the subject of yesterday's story, would have turned 100 today, but I missed that ;) - Overnight, Tamara Milashkina became GA and Lando Bartolini went to the Main page. I made my story about his almost unbelievable career, from Luigi in Il tabarro in Philadelphia in 1968 (with a nod to Liberty) up to Calaf in Turandot in Beijing in 1999 ;) - 4 July is also the birthday of Brian Boulton who was a pioneer of a concise infobox in 2013. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:12, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pictured on the Main page: Brian's Mozart family grand tour, my story today, and Mozart related to all three items of music on my talk: our 2023 concert, an opera in a theatre where a Mozart premiere took place, and those remembered, Martti Wallén, a bass, and Liana Isakadze, a violinist from Georgia, (whose article would be better with more details about her music-making). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:18, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations to delightful quality content! We thank you today espcially for DeLancey W. Gill, introduced: "DeLancey Walker Gill is an interesting fellow. My story today is - because of the anniversary of the premiere OTD in 1782 - about Die Entführung aus dem Serail, opera by Mozart, while yesterday's was - because of the TFA - about Les contes d'Hoffmann, opera by Offenbach, - so 3 times Mozart if you click on "music" ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:56, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Generalissima, I'm reviewing India at the 2020 Summer Olympics at the moment and it is one of the most exhausting reviewing experiences I've undertaken. The prose is clear but very repetitive; just look at the athletics section. I'm unsure how to proceed with evaluating against the GA criteria 3b–summary style and 1 in general. I noticed you held up Palestine at the 1996 Summer Olympics as a high quality Olympic article, but I wanted your feedback whether the gap between these articles is large enough, based on the GA crit, to be problematic? Thanks in advance, Rollinginhisgrave (talk) 05:20, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Rollinginhisgrave Hmm! That is an interesting case. You're right the prose is repetitive; it seems to be stating much of what has been said in the table in the prose (this is done a little bit with the Palestine 1996 article, but there also isn't that much else to say when you have a single athlete!) The GAN is certainly a good overview, but I think you're right that the prose of the individual sports needs to be in a stricter summary style for an article that big. A more condensed prose would probably help with the readability too. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 05:26, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

They have conducted 357 featured content reviews, as well as 553 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 30 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed during Round 5, which starts on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. If two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Remember to claim your points within 14 days of earning them, and importantly, before the deadline on 31 October.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please see this page. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages.   A new editor on the right path
Well. It's been two and a half years since I welcomed you and offered to answer any questions, and about a year since you took me up on that. So I suppose that something like this is in order. There doesn't seem to be any barnstar for being a good mentee, but you're still a new editor to me, #148 on WP:WBGAN or not, so here you go.

I think you're well aware of how impressive it is what you've accomplished in a year, so I won't stroke your ego too much, but I will say that this has been just about the easiest mentorship experience someone could ask for. More importantly, it's been great to watch you grow in this time, seeing how Wikipedia's given you a space to share your interests with the world. It's also meant fewer late-night phone calls listening to you talk about coins, so truly a win-win for me.

It's easy to lose sight, amidst the heartache and the thousand natural shocks of building an encyclopedia, of the importance of what we do here. The more cynical I've become about this project and how we sometimes overstate our own righteousness, the more I understand just how much what we write about influences the way people see the world. It's not just that people go to us for their facts. It's that our facts decide what a lot of people think about. Whether we have a decently-written article on a topic might be the difference between someone ever learning or not learning that that thing exists. Relative to the size of that burden, there aren't nearly enough people in the world who are both able to create good content and willing to do so for free while conforming to our policies. I'm glad that you are one of those people, and glad to have you in my life. :) Happy editing, newbie. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 04:17, 21 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the review at DYK! It means a lot because I partly joined the DCWC to try and force myself to finish that draft, and I thought it may have been too late. Originally I was going to write an article on fisheries management areas as I find it interesting as a topic (see my request for a map here which sadly no-one was able to do). However, I noticed the distinct lack of articles on fisheries for the Philippines or Indonesia (the other country I know of with FMAs), so I thought I may as well make one of those articles. Sadly, sources begot sources and the article got too long and the scope kept creeping and we are where we are. I've never made a good topic; I don't know how to evaluate whether this is every article you would expect from a topic on Philippine fisheries. I am generally quite hesitant to nominate GAs, and the sub-articles started as holding pens for overflowing information so may still need work. I know I wouldn't consider the Aquaculture article a GA, and would also have to take another look at Commercial fisheries. If you have thoughts from the perspective of someone who hasn't had their brain turned to mush by this topic for months, I'd of course welcome them. CMD (talk) 08:36, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

I do always also say the criteria are lenient, but perhaps I also don't treat my own work the same way. The second opinion is really quite helpful though, I will keep it in mind. Recreational fishing does exist, perhaps mostly as tourism, but it's not going to be a big thing on its own as for the vast majority of people anyone recreationally fishing would eat or sell the resulting fish anyway. However, there is definitely enough out there to have a dedicated article on illegal fishing, I suspect there would be for most countries. Further, while I haven't looked into it specifically, I suspect you could really get into the weeds and have articles on the tuna fisheries, the sardine fisheries, and specific species farming if you wanted. For example, I WP:REDYESed genetically improved farmed tilapia, itself a subset of wider tilapia farming. So I'm not sure where the boundary lies in GT between the actual articles and the possible articles. CMD (talk) 01:32, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
CMD From what I have seen the line for GT is where the components parts provide a overview of the whole topic. There's way more you could say add to Wikipedia:Good topics/Macedonia (ancient kingdom), Wikipedia:Featured topics/Everglades, or Wikipedia talk:Featured topics/Han dynasty, but they give an overview of the topic collectively from a bunch of different angles under the main article. I don't think specific species fisheries would be needed, since they'd be given some coverage across all the articles. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 01:53, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

The 2024 Developing Countries WikiContest has come to a close! After a thrilling finish to the event with a slew of submissions on the final day, we have our winners. With 608 points,     Thebiguglyalien (submissions) comes in third with his series of Kiribati and Botswanan submissions;     BeanieFan11 (submissions) flies into second place at the last second with 771 points after a string of good articles about sportspersons; and after leading for much of contest's three months,     Generalissima (submissions) finishes with a whopping 798 points to take home the Gold Belt Buckle. Congratulations to our winners!

In addition to his spot in the top three,   BeanieFan11 (submissions) also wins the special awards for submitting under the most countries (44 countries) and for writing the most articles about women (15 Did you know? nominations)!   Magentic Manifestations (submissions), after making 16 submissions under the Indian flag—15 of them good articles—receives the awards for most submissions for a single country and most featured or good articles promoted. For their submission of one FAC review, five FLC reviews, and 20 GAN reviews, Simongraham (submissions) wins for most article reviews.

The results of the contest have far exceeded any expectations the coordinators had for it at the beginning: among the submissions to the event were 3 FAs, 10 FLs, 88 GAs, dozens of article reviews of every kind, and more Did you know? submissions than we can count! Regardless of your level of participation, every contestant can be proud to have contributed towards a major step in countering the systemic bias on Wikipedia. Every year, millions of readers and editors around the globe use Wikipedia to educate themselves and communicate with others about parts of the world that often receive less attention than they deserve. Thank you for participating with us in the contest and contributing to this effort. The DCWC will return next year and we look forward to seeing you contribute again! However, before that...

We need your feedback! Join the conversation on the talk page to discuss your reflections on the contest (even if you didn't participate!) and help us make it better.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or ask one of the coordinators: Ixtal (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs).
