The October 2015 NYC WikiWednesday salon and skill-share with the Wikimedia NYC community was held Wednesday, October 28, 2015, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Babycastles, a co-working space and gallery located near 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.

Bring your own ideas!

  • 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm: Introductions for visitors
    • Newcomer's Wiki Workshop!
  • 7:30 pm - 8:00 pm: Review of 2016 budget proposal
  • 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Reflection on budget - group discussion - everyone present should speak. Criticism especially welcome!
  • 9:00 pm: Maybe watch livestreaming of 'How can you write an open access encyclopedia in a closed access world?' from Wikimedia Foundation offices
  • We should have a talk about the money available in the movement, what volunteers can do, what staff can do, and how to address the increasing demand this chapter gets for professionalism, outreach, and services for partner organizations.

Part time positions for several staff considered.

  • Project Managers. Projects including Art+Feminism, Architecture+Feminism, AfroCROWD are high profile and already have their own WMF grants to operate. WM NYC would not seek to encroach upon their already successful operation. However, chapter participants should have a discussion about the affiliation between the chapter and the managers of these projects. Managers for these individual projects may be hiring and overseeing their own staff, and to some extent, these projects reflect on this chapter and the international Wikimedia community.
  • Outreach Coordinator. Assist with reporting of project outcomes, communication, and scheduling. It has been difficult to automate this. Organizations including the WMF would appreciate the routine reporting of what the Wikimedia community does in affiliation with the chapter. If such a person is hired, they would be the central point of contact for any area project which needs assistance collecting and reporting Wikimedia metrics and reporting outcomes in the channels that the Wikimedia Foundation prefers. The reason why this should be a staff position is that it seems to be a poor use of volunteer time to learn the proprietary and esoteric customs for reporting the odd metrics in the odd ways that are customary in the Wikimedia community. If there could be centralization of this then project managers could spend their time focusing on impact, and learning the required Wikimedia reporting customs would be less of a barrier to participation.
  • Videographer. It is proposed to hire an established, professional videographer on 5-8 days in 2016. There would be two types of video days: for big events, this person would attend and make a 3-5 minute mini-documentary about the event. In the other type of event, this person would set up a temporary film studio somewhere - probably in Babycastles where we usually meet - and any WM NYC participate could apply for studio time to make a short video with good video, audio, and the ability to show slides. After the filming day the videographer would do post-production and return videos to be published. The speed of this program will depend on the videographer's time to do post production and WM NYC participants readiness to write scripts, rehearse, and plan their presentations in advance of volunteering to present on camera.
