2. (neo-Confucianism) a woman who commits suicide after her husband or fiancé's death rather than remarry, or who dies preserving her chastity

     瑠璃子(るりこ)は、昂然(こうぜん)と現代(げんだい)の烈女(れつじょ)と云(い)つてもいゝやうに、美(うつく)しく勇(いさ)ましかつた。
