roden
roden c
roden
- inflection of rodar:
From northern Middle High German roten, roden and Middle Low German rōden, from Proto-Germanic *rudōną, which is related to *raupijaną (“to rip out, pluck”), *reufaną (“to tear”).[1] Cognate with Dutch rooien. Also akin to English rid, Danish rydde.
The variant rotten (still in ausrotten) shows a more southern phonetical development. However, most Upper German dialects used the verb reuten, from Old High German riutan, which is related but not identical with the former.
roden (weak, third-person singular present rodet, past tense rodete, past participle gerodet, auxiliary haben)
- reuten (southern; now archaic)
From Middle High German raten, from Old High German rātan, from Proto-West Germanic *rādan. Cognate with German raten, Dutch raden, English read, Icelandic ráða.
roden (third-person singular present réit or rot, past participle geroden, auxiliary verb hunn)
- (transitive) to recommend, to advise
- (intransitive) to guess
